Earlier this year, we shared the exciting news that our very own Di Dale had been awarded the Emergency Services Medal (ESM) as part of the Australia Day Honours.

This week, that recognition became even more special, as Di was officially presented with her medal at Government House.

The ESM recognises distinguished service as a member of an emergency service organisation — and we couldn’t think of anyone more deserving.

UPDATE - DOG HAS BEEN COLLECTED BY THE RANGER

FOUND DOG - Gisborne CFA

Someone has clearly decided that Gisborne Fire Brigade - CFA needed a new recruit… and we’re not sure they’ve passed the entrance exam yet. 😂

This beautiful, very fluffy pup has been found in the Gisborne area and is now safely secured in the rear yard of Gisborne CFA.

They’re safe, but we suspect they’re currently considering a career change into emergency services. 👀🐾

If this is your four-legged friend, please make your way to Gisborne CFA to collect them.

🚨🐶 MEET THE DOGS OF GISBORNE SES 🐶🚨

It’s International Dog Day, so naturally we’re introducing the real VIPs of Gisborne SES! 🧡

They may not know how to lay a sandbag, operate a chainsaw or conduct a road crash rescue… but they’re experts at:

🐾 Stealing snacks from volunteers
🐾 Providing emotional support after a long callout
🐾 Looking very concerned when the pager goes off
🐾 And being very good boys and girls!

But while our unit dogs are here for moral support, there are some seriously impressive working dogs out there. 🐕‍🦺

Australian Search and Rescue K9 unit put their incredible noses, training and dedication to work searching for missing and vulnerable people. They’re a pretty special part of the emergency services family — and definitely make our dogs look a little less, what shall we say, qualified! 😂

So today, we’re celebrating all the dogs of emergency services — from the highly trained search and rescue K9s to the ones whose main qualification is professional snack detector. 🐶🧡

Where:
For people in parts of Central, North Central, West and South Gippsland and North East Forecast Districts.

Locations which may be affected include Melbourne, Yarra Glen, Mt Baw Baw and Rosebud.

When:
Damaging winds possible in Melbourne and the central ranges today.

Situation:
A strong northerly flow is forecast to develop this morning ahead of a trough crossing Victoria, bringing strong winds over central parts of the state. Winds will then tend northwesterly and ease during the afternoon in the wake of the trough.

Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible throughout the central ranges this morning. After sunrise these winds may extend into Melbourne and parts of the Mornington and Bellarine Peninsulas.

Winds are expected to ease during the afternoon.

What you should do:
The Victoria State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible.
* Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees.
* Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet.
* Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Stay indoors and away from windows.
* If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways.
* Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live.
* Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads.
* Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline.

The next warning is due to be issued by 11:00 am AEST Wednesday.

We're seeing flooding impacts across the state this morning on the back of heavy rainfall, including response for flood rescues.

Floodwater is dangerous. It can take as little as 15cm of flowing water to float a car. Never, ever enter floodwater.

If you are driving and encounter floodwater, turn around and find an alternative travel route. Don’t risk it.

For people in parts of Central, East Gippsland, North Central, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Locations which may be affected include Falls Creek, Dargo, Mt Baw Baw, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller and Omeo.

When:
Damaging winds developing over the central and eastern ranges today.

Situation:
North to northwesterly winds are strengthening over the state ahead of a cold front forecast to cross Victoria later today. Winds should weaken overnight ahead of a broad low pressure system moving across western Victoria and into Bass Strait on Monday.

For the Macedon and Central Ranges: Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 90 km/h are possible during Sunday, and are forecast to ease during Sunday evening.

For the Northeast Ranges and Alpine Areas: Damaging winds averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely during Sunday, and are forecast to ease early Monday morning.

Winds are forecast to ease below warning thresholds early Monday morning.

Impacts:
100 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mt Buller at 10:37 am
96 km/h wind gust was recorded at Mt Hotham at 10:41 am

A strong cold front is expected to move across Victoria this weekend, with the worst conditions forecast from Sunday into Monday, bringing widespread rain, strong winds and the potential for localised flooding.

VICSES is urging Victorians to prepare now by:

• Securing loose outdoor items.
• Clearing gutters and drains.
• Staying up to date with the latest forecasts and warnings through the VicEmergency app.
• Avoiding unnecessary travel during severe weather where possible.

Those travelling to the alpine region should remain vigilant as conditions can change. Download the VicEmergency app and set up a Watch Zone for your destination to receive the latest info.

Happy International Day of Friendship! 🧡

I’m sure you’ve seen this duo around the Gisborne area. If you spot Tori or Shanleigh, chances are the other one isn’t far behind! 🤣

What started through volunteering at Gisborne SES has grown into a friendship built on shared passions, plenty of laughs, and a commitment to serving the community together.

Today marks the International Day of Friendship, so we asked some VICSES volunteers about the connections they’ve formed at their units. 🧡

Tori and Shanleigh are known as a ‘package deal’ at the SES Gisborne Unit, brought together by their shared passion for helping communities prepare for and respond to emergencies.

“We are both equally passionate about community engagement. I would say we are both empathetic, supportive, approachable, and willing to give anything a go.” – Tori

Outside of VICSES, the pair enjoy crafting, country music, and empowering women and girls.

🚗 Gisborne SES is seeking unwanted vehicles! 🚗

Did you know that one of the specialist roles of Gisborne SES is Road Crash Rescue?

Our volunteers regularly train to maintain the specialist skills needed to safely rescue people trapped in vehicles following serious road crashes. To ensure we’re ready when our community needs us most, we’re looking for unregistered vehicles to use during our training.

If you have an old car sitting in your driveway or on your property that you no longer need, we’d love to hear from you. We welcome vehicles in any condition.

With so many high-speed roads connecting towns across the Macedon Ranges, our volunteers regularly respond to serious collisions requiring specialist rescue techniques and equipment. Vehicle donations play a vital role in helping us maintain the highest level of rescue capability for our local community and across Victoria.
