Over three-quarters of a million Victorians are carers
A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to family members and/or friends with a disability, mental illness, substance addiction, chronic health issue or an older person with care needs.
They are parents, children, partners, other relatives and friends who assist with a variety of personal care, health care, transport, navigating complex service systems, managing financial tasks, emotional support, household chores and other activities.

A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to family members and/or friends.

Carer support groups bring together people who share common experiences in their carer roles. These groups offer emotional, social and practical support by sharing knowledge and understanding.

What you can expect

Emotional support – talk openly with others who understand the pressures of caring – people independent of the person you care for or your family.
Practical information, tips & resources – learn about local services, medical treatments, research updates, and helpful strategies to ease your caring role
New friends and social connection – caring can make it hard to stay connected with friends and family. Support groups help you build new friendships and feel less alone

Although originally intended as a support group for carers only, it soon became evident that while carers needed some time out, they also enjoyed the company of their loved ones […]

Cover Art‘People in the community’ are the challenge and the solution: Towards a dementia-friendly future Discussion Paper by Dementia Australia

Publication Date: 2024
"With the number of people in Australia living with dementia, along with the number of carers, friends and family, it is almost unbelievable that we are still having to talk about the limited awareness and understanding about the condition.

This paper identifies the similarities between the results of a 2019 report and the 2023 AIHW Dementia Aware Survey, recognising that this lack of knowledge results in stigma, discrimination and social exclusion. As a person living with dementia, this saddens me. Why do people treat us differently? What have we done to deserve this? As a Dementia Advocate, it angers me. Why are people not listening? Why are they not changing their attitudes? All we are asking for is to be understood, respected and supported - just basic human rights."

Webinar: Engaging in Community
Dementia Australia webinars are free videos where subject experts discuss topics relating to dementia for a general audience.

In this webinar Anthony Parker, Community Development Officer at Dementia Australia, Dementia Advocate Russell Martin and Amy Rake from Tamworth Library talk about how we can all be involved in creating dementia-friendly and inclusive communities in collaboration with people living with dementia, their carers and families.

Being involved is rewarding and meaningful, and starts with the collective actions and decisions we each make every day.

You will learn:

the impact of dementia on individuals, carers and families
how to live well with dementia
what a dementia-friendly community is and examples of dementia-friendly communities
how to take action and get started towards being inclusive of people living with dementia, carers and families.

Anthony Parker, Russell Martin and Amy Rake talk about creating dementia-friendly communities in this free Dementia Australia expert video webinar.
