Geraldton City RSL The price of liberty is eternal vigilance Advocacy and Representation. Commemoration and Remembrance. Commitment to democratic principles and practices.

The Role and Objectives of the RSL

To serve the interests of its members, veterans, the ex-service community and members of the Australian Defence Force, the RSL executes its role by effectively implementing the following objectives which are in accord with the League's Mission Statement:

Welfare. Assistance to all veterans and ex-service men and women regardless of their membership in the Lea

gue. Participation in employment Programs for veterans, ex-service members and their dependants. Provision of a means for members to enjoy camaraderie and mateship. Provision of effective and efficient management of RSL assets and resources for the benefit of its members and serving members of the ADF. Act as an effective lobby group to Government and its departments. Provision of moral and active support for the ADF. Provision of a respected and meaningful voice within the community and Australian society. Promotion of loyalty and pride which the League has for the Nation, its people, the Crown and the Flag. Supporting the Australian Defence Force

RSL Standing Policy states that the primary objective of Australia's Defence and foreign policies should be to promote Australia's national security and safeguard Australia's vital interests. To meet such an objective, the RSL believes that Australia should maintain:

regular armed forces (Navy, Army and Air Force elements); to be of a size able to operate without additional forces in limited roles, and with additional forces in major roles either at home or overseas;
reserve forces (Navy, Army and Air Force elements); able to augment the regular forces, on callout able to undertake combat operations with minimum additional training, and able to be mobilised in times short of war;
cadet forces;
a national service scheme; in the form of military or civilian service to provide a reserve of trained and disciplined manpower;
a Defence industry; and
a national Defence infrastructure. RSL support points of particular significance are:

Defence policy should be above party politics. Because of its long term nature, major political parties must strive for agreement on Defence policy. The Defence vote should be progressively increased to be not less than 3.5% of the Gross National Product. The special nature of service in the ADF should be recognised by the provision of adequate housing and financial conditions of service for members and their families. The Navy, Army and Air Force Reserves must be active and essential components of the ADF.

*~*~*~ Geraldton City Sub-Branch Recognition ~*~*~*
While the RSLWA awards are open to any RSL sub-branch historically the majority of annual awards go to either the larger metropolitan, or membership limited regional sub-branches. Geraldton City Sub-Branch largely falls between the two variants so we rarely get a look-in at annual awards and it’s been over 10 years since we last received a RSLWA annual award.
I was already on quite a buzz (as Barry can attest) as Geraldton had already received 2 Life Memberships - 28% of this years’ total quota! You can imagine my stunned amazement when Geraldton City Sub-Branch was announced as the winners of the Lieutenant Colonel Ken Bladden Recruiting Shield for the most increased membership of 2025.
I’d like to express a massive CONGRATULATIONS to Geraldton City RSL committee and branch members for your continued work and support of our sub-branch. You make me proud!

*~*~*~ CONGRATULATIONS ~*~*~*
Congratulations to Kerry Ross and Barry Stinson our two newest RSLWA Life Members! Both gents were recognised by the Honours and Awards Committee as having dedicated a significant amount of personal time and effort into supporting the Geraldton City RSL Sub-Branch for a very long period.
While there are, in my opinion, a number of other long term Geraldton City RSL members well deserving of Life Membership unfortunately there are a very limited number of people considered for the honour annually. Additionally, my thanks go to Ken Morris who began the work and to Warren Nathan who did the majority of the leg work to finalise the Life Membership submissions.
At last weekends’ State Congress we were informed that of the 112 Western Australian sub-branches and more than 150,000 service members therein only 7 positions for life membership were available for award this year. Geraldton City Sub-Branch has not had a Life Membership awarded for more than 10 years so it’s with great pride that we achieved 2 of the 7 Life Memberships awarded this year.
I believe I speak for all Geraldton City members when I wish you a heartfelt congratulations Kerry & Barry on your official recognition.
