The 19th of July was special night at HMAS Sydney II Memorial in Geraldton. A band of High School Students came to play popular songs of WW11, the band was very good and were a credit to themselves and their band master. The students came from the Perth Hills and Wheatbelt. It is hoped they can return. One song of note was excellent as it was written by the Bandmaster Peter Hird and was the Sydney II story

HMAS Sydney II Memorial Guided Tours

On the 19th November 1941, HMAS Sydney II disappeared without trace after she encountered the German Raider HSK Kormoran off the coast of Western Australia. On that tragic day during WWII, the Sydney was lost with all hands – a compliment of 645 young men. It was 67 years later before both ships were found resting at the bottom of the ocean. The loss of HMAS Sydney II is Australia’s greatest naval tragedy within Australian waters. The Geraldton Voluntary Tour Guides offer daily tours at 10.30am at the site of the Memorial.
