Wildflower Tours - Bird Walks - Planting Day - Clean Up Day - etc. CRRP is an wonderful natural bushland within the city of Geraldton-WA. It is an invaluable environment to enjoy outdoors activities in respect with the wildlife. Preserving such an asset is key for the Geraldton’s community and future generations. Billy Carr is a local historian and author dedicated to sharing the stories that shaped this region.
With his strong connections to both Aboriginal and Irish convict ancestry, he will share a Talk & Walk along the Chapman River.
Billy is also the author of “A Wilunyu Matriarch”, a powerful story of culture, resilience and family told through the life of Granny Kirkup a remarkable Aboriginal woman from the Wilunyu people of Geraldton.

The bush is now bursting into bloom, with orchids, Everlasting Daisies and flowering shrubs putting on a wonderful show. This area is particularly rich in wildflowers thanks to its diverse habitats, and is also home to several Priority Plants, known from only a few locations, including Eremophila brevifolia (P2), Thryptomene stenophylla (P2), Blackallia nudiflora (P3) and Verticordia densiflora var. roseostella (P3).

“I will share general information on BHA but more specifically on the importance of conserving remnant vegetation and restoring it where it has been cleared. I will talk about the importance of biodiversity in both conservation and restoration, using Mid West flora species as examples.”

CRF Bushwalk & Clean UP - Saturday 15.08.26
Chapman River Regional Park, Geraldton

Last Saturday, Alice Bishop from Birdlife Midwest-Geraldton joined us for a wonderful walk from Tersonia Way. She shared practical birdwatching tips, reminding us to move quietly, pause, listen and observe. She also provided an update on bird flu and what to do if we find dead birds.

Birds spotted: Singing Honeyeater, Brown Goshawk, Grey Shrike-thrush, Willie Wagtail, Brown Honeyeater, White-plumed Honeyeater, Crested Pigeon, Galah, Black-shouldered Kite, Fan-tailed Cuckoo (heard calling) and Laughing Dove.
A big thank you to Alice for sharing her knowledge and passion!

The Tersonia Way walk was spectacular, with birds singing all around us, wildflowers blooming, diverse landscapes from limestone to sandplain, and the Chapman River flowing beautifully through the Reserve.

Thanks the participants for removing a large tyre dumped along the Service Rd.

CRF Bushwalk & Clean UP - Sunday 09.08.26

Special thanks to our incredible guides, Colin and Greg, for revealing the hidden wonders beneath our feet in the world of soil.

We also delved into the fascinating connections between fungi, native grasses, and the broader vegetation community.
It was eye-opening to learn that around 90% of plants rely on some type of mycorrhizal connection. For example, orchids require specific mycorrhizal fungi to thrive, which means they only grow where these fungi are found.

Perennial grass roots nourish the underground fungal network and protect the steep slopes in the park from erosion. Some of these grasses, like Mulga Grass (Neurachne alopecuroidea) with its delicate mauve seed heads, are truly beautiful.
Later in spring, Feather Speargrass (Austrostipa elegantissima) adds a soft white topping to shrubs in the reserve.

Leguminous plants like peas and wattles also play a vital role by using root bacteria to capture nitrogen from the air, creating natural fertiliser for other plants.

Everything in nature is connected and maintaining balance among all forms of life is crucial. Perhaps these fungi and grasses can teach us valuable lessons about life’s interconnectedness!
