After a beautiful season of Bushwalks and Clean Ups throughout August and September, we wrapped up with a final Clean Up at the Estuary.

Last Saturday, a small group of dedicated volunteers braved the strong Seabreeze to remove litter around the Chapman River mouth, beach and Swan Drive park.

We finished with pizza and garlic bread - a well-earned reward!

A big thank you to EVERYONE who joined us and helped create a cleaner, healthier habitat for our wildlife!

What a great way to finish our CRF Bushwalk Season!

A big thank you to Mark Teale from DFES, who joined us for our final walk and shared his knowledge about bushfire preparedness and how fire affects our environment.
Mark explained how the November 2025 bushfire impacted the Reserve and why it became so intense. He also encouraged everyone, especially families, to talk about how they can prepare for extreme bushfire situations.

We walked along the North Loop Trail and Jenna’s Flora Walk, where we spotted some of the first plants returning after the fire: Everlasting Daisies, Dampiera and, to our delight, the first flowering Hemigenia! On the way back along the Service Road, we enjoyed the beautiful Austrostipa grasses dancing in the wind and some Geraldton Wax.
Our bushwalk season may be over, but the Reserve is still full of life and surprises!

Chapman River Regional Park, Geraldton-WA

Big THANKS to Tyson Isles for sharing with us an insight of his work in flora conservation with the Dept. of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attraction. His specialised work focuses on the unique ecology of OCBIL landscapes - Old, Climatically Buffered, Infertile Landscapes, which are exceptionally prominent in regions such as Western Australia (ex.: the Moresby Range) and host highly localised, rare species found nowhere else on Earth.

Along the Loop Trail at Tersonia Way, the wildflowers were blooming beautifully with a mix of landscapes and the beautiful view on the Chapman River starting to slow down.
The Chapman River Regional Park is locally and regionally significant for its diverse vegetation and habitats, which include Priority and threatened species. No comparable system is found within 50 km of the reserve (Northampton). (Bowen Bishaw Gotham, 1992) - Ref.: Mitchell McCotter, 1993

No doubt, it is a privilege to go for a bushwalk in town... just at 5-10min from home!

Only a few rubbish were found along the walk.

Mark Teale is an Area Officer with the Department of Fire & Emergency Services-DFES, specialising in rural firefighting operations. Mark will cover some of the basics of what influences bushfires, how bushfires are controlled and mitigated, and finally, what people can do to prepare their families and properties for the next bushfire season. Mark will also provide a short overview of the bushfire that occurred within the Chapman River Regional Park last year.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
* Suitable for kids aged 6+
* Your safety is YOUR responsibility. The paths are rough.
* Bring a water bottle, sunhat, sunscreen, and raincoat
* Walks are educational with frequent stops
* Please keep your canine friend at home to give us a chance to observe wildlife during our walks.
* Walks go ahead in rain, unless severe weather

Pick up sticks and bags will be available to collect rubbish during the walk.

CRF Bushwalk & Clean UP - 12.09.26
Chapman River Regional Park, Geraldton-WA

Last Saturday, we were delighted to welcome Dr Fiamma Riviera, Restoration Ecologist for the Mid West with Bush Heritage Australia (BHA), to the Chapman River Regional Park.
Fiamma shared the inspiring work BHA is doing to protect and regenerate remnant vegetation across WA, including at Eurardy, Hamelin and Charles Darwin Reserves. She also spoke about the new acquisition Wanarra Station as a conservation reserve in one of the most-cleared regions of the country.

Fiamma highlighted the importance of protecting large areas of bushland such as the Chapman River Regional Park, especially within urban areas, where they provide vital refuge for our local flora and fauna.

And nature certainly put on a beautiful show for us! Wildflowers were blooming along the way, adding splashes of colour to the bush, while the Chapman River was flowing strongly, framed by flowering Melaleucas.
Walking through the breakaway and sandplain, we experienced just a glimpse of the incredible diversity of habitats within our Reserve.
So much to discover, so much to protect, and so lucky to have the Chapman River Regional Park right here on our doorstep.

It’s a lovely way to recognise the efforts of our beautiful community to bring back our local native plants to this cleared section, through our CRF Planting 2026 at Swan Drive.

Little by little, with many helping hands, we’re giving this patch of bush a chance to recover and thrive again. 🌱💜

Tyson Isles: Flora conservation officer, Murchison district - Dept. Biodiversity, Conservation & Attraction.
Tyson specialises in the unique native plants of ancient OCBIL landscapes and the rare species found nowhere else. His work focuses on improving our understanding of little-known plants to help protect them for future generations. Tyson also studies how native plant communities respond to disturbances such as fire, supporting better conservation and land management.

Please remember:
• Suitable for children aged 6+.
• Bush tracks are uneven – your safety is your responsibility.
• Bring water, a hat, sunscreen (and a rain jacket).
• Walks are educational with regular stops.
• Please leave dogs at home to help us observe our native wildlife.
• Walks go ahead in light rain unless severe weather is forecast.
