As we continue our weekly series leading up to the 2026 YSRC AGM, we’re sharing more about the people who sit around our Board table and the experience they bring to YSRC.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱?
I have enjoyed bringing my cultural and lived experiences to the group and especially the historical knowledge of the Southern Yamatji journey. Learning of the prospects that are on the horizon for the future for Southern Yamatji excites me too. I am pleased with the value adding, collaboration and perspectives from leaders with a broad range of experiences to pursue best outcomes.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱?
Growing up in Geraldton, Yamatji is always in my heart. One of a few reasons I wanted to join is that I believe there is some unfinished business to better realising benefits for Southern Yamatji mob. I would very much like Southern Yamatji mob to have trust and faith in the leadership to act in the best interests of their families and communities.

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳?

Whilst I think we have more to do together in terms of true Yamatji self-determination, respecting, doing and being Yamatji, I am particularly proud of the Cultural Authority of our governance model. I am anxious to restore our customs and traditions for our future generations, so they feel they belong.

𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲?
I am honoured to have served Yamatji being a founding member of GASA and YMAC, and still a strong supporter and advocate for GRAMS, MRAC and Bundiyarra. I am privileged to have represented the rights and interest of Australia's First Nations peoples and Indigenous peoples internationally. I am particularly proud to have been involved with Native Title for more than two decades and to be a part of the negotiation team to have the Southern Yamatji ILUA we have today. I have extensive cultural knowledge, directorship and leadership experience and expertise across many sectors including, governance, education, mental health and wellbeing and professional organisational coaching.

🌿🔬 𝐒𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰𝐥𝐞𝐝𝐠𝐞, 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧!

Our Yamatji Rangers had a fantastic time at the WA Gould League Inspiring WA STEM Roadshow in Geraldton, sharing how traditional knowledge, science and technology come together to care for Country and Sea Country. 🌊🌱

The Rangers gave the community a hands-on look at the work they do, from monitoring wildlife and protecting our coastlines and marine life, to caring for cultural sites and Country.

They also brought along some of the tools and technology they use out on Country, giving young people and families the chance to get up close, ask plenty of questions and discover what being a Ranger is all about.

And judging by the feedback, they were a hit! 🙌

💬 “Your workshop was so engaging and well received… it really brought the session to life.”

We were also thrilled to hear that, if funding is successful for next year, the organisers are looking at holding the event during the week so our Rangers can join in for both days. We’d love that!

A big thank you to WA Gould League for having us, and to our Yamatji Rangers for sharing their knowledge, skills and passion for caring for Country and inspiring the next generation. 💚

Lifeline WA and 13YARN are hosting a free community workshop in Geraldton during Mental Health Month.

Come along for morning tea and learn more about Lifeline’s 24/7 Crisis Support Service and 13YARN, Australia’s first national crisis support line for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The session will provide practical information and skills to help you feel more confident supporting someone who may be struggling, including having supportive conversations and understanding available help and support pathways.

The workshop is suitable for community members, volunteers, service providers, community leaders, workplaces and anyone wanting to strengthen their ability to support others.

YSRC is proud to see our new Yamatji Nyitty (junior, young) Rangers Program rolling out, creating opportunities for our Yamatji Rangers to share knowledge, culture and caring for Country with the next generation. ❤️💛🖤

Recently, our Rangers joined Waggrakine Primary School students for an On Country learning experience along the Chapman River.

Before heading out, students learned about fire on Country, including its impacts on the environment, wildlife and ecosystems, and the important role fire can play in regeneration and land management.

Out on Country, the students were able to see it all firsthand, exploring areas affected by the recent fire, learning about post-fire recovery and taking part in bird monitoring activities to identify local species and understand how wildlife responds to environmental change. 🌱🦜

It’s fantastic to see the Yamatji Nyitty Rangers Program bringing learning to life, combining Yamatji knowledge, culture and science and giving young people the opportunity to learn directly from our Rangers while building their own connection to Country.

We’re excited to see this program continue to grow and share more On Country learning experiences with local schools. 🌿

This week we’re introducing Michael Paarup, YSRC & YEL Director, as part of our weekly series leading up to the 2026 YSRC AGM.

𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱? What I have enjoyed most is the opportunity to work alongside dedicated Directors, community leaders and management teams who are committed to creating positive outcomes for Yamatji people. It has been particularly rewarding to contribute an independent perspective while supporting decisions that seek to balance current opportunities with sustainable, long-term benefits for future generations. These roles allow me to draw upon my experience across governance, strategy, commercial management, law, and major infrastructure projects, while learning from the unique knowledge, history, and aspirations of the Yamatji community. The passion demonstrated by everyone involved has been both impressive and inspiring.

𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗱𝗶𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗱𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗷𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗮𝗿𝗱? I joined the YSRC and YEL Boards because I believe strong governance, strategic thinking, and commercial discipline are critical foundations for achieving long-term success and creating enduring value for our members. The opportunities aligned strongly with my professional background as a Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, Project Director, Lawyer, Certified Practising Accountant, and Company Director, and leveraged my 35 years of leadership experience working across 5 continents. I enjoy contributing these skills and experiences in a way that supports sustainable economic development, sound governance, and informed decision-making for the benefit of the Yamatji people.

𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝘂𝘁𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳? While board achievements are always the result of collective effort, I am particularly proud of the Board’s continued focus on strengthening governance, accountability, strategic planning, and organisational capabilities across all our entities. I am passionate about helping organisations develop winning strategies, improve performance, manage major projects, and maximise stakeholder value. It has therefore been especially satisfying to contribute to initiatives that help build strong foundations for the Yamatji Nation’s future growth, create opportunities for members, and position YSRC and YEL to deliver lasting benefits for current and future generations.

𝗜𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘄𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲?I am humbled and honoured to serve as an Independent Non-Executive Director on both the YSRC and YEL Boards and as a member of the Yamatji Nominations Committee. My roles include providing objective oversight, independent judgement, and constructive challenge, while pursuing wise decisions that are in the best interests of our organisations and members. Because my experience spans corporate governance, legal, commercial, financial, and operational leadership, supported by Doctorate, MBA and Commerce Degrees, a Diploma of Financial Planning, and qualifications as a Barrister, Solicitor, CPA and Company Director, I view my Board roles as an opportunity to share valuable lessons learned and help improve efficiency, protect country, culture and lore, drive positive change, deliver major projects, and create sustainable value. I remain committed to supporting the Yamatji Boards, management teams, and members in building strong, resilient organisations that can continue to create opportunities and benefits for the Yamatji people for many years to come.
