We've hit the road and headed to the Riverland as part of CCF SA’s commitment to engaging with members and industry in the regions.

CCF SA’s CEO Jessica Tucker met with G L Hausler, Santos Ready Mixed Concrete, and Stoney Pinch Quarry and Earthmoving – all strong supporters of CCF SA and valued members – and discussed the unique challenges and opportunities in the region’s civil sector.

The trip also provided an opportunity to meet with Berri Barmera Council, where we discussed civil infrastructure projects in a local government setting.

CCF SA looks forward to continuing its regional engagement, with plans to increase the frequency of visits to our members in the regions in the year ahead.

CCF SA recently welcomed Dan van Holst Pellekaan, South Australia’s Small Business Commissioner, to our Centre for Excellence.

Appointed to the role late last year, the visit provided an opportunity to show the Commissioner our world-class facilities, discuss the challenges and opportunities facing small-to-medium civil contractors, and learn more about the support available through the Small Business Commission SA.

The Commission provides independent and impartial support, including dispute resolution, mediation services, advocacy and guidance for businesses dealing with issues involving customers, suppliers, other businesses, or State and Local Government.

CCF SA looks forward to continuing its relationship with the Commissioner and collaborating on our shared advocacy agenda, while connecting our members with the support services available.

Earlier this year, the civil construction industry lost one of its most respected leaders, with the passing of Joe Tripodi OAM.

Joe held a significant place in the history of CCF SA, serving as President in 1979 during the Federation's formative years, while his influence continued well beyond his presidency as a long-standing member and supporter.

In recognition of his enduring contribution, Joe was inducted into the CCF SA Hall of Fame in 2015 and, more recently, the Tripodi Group was honoured with the President's Lifetime Achievement Corporate Award to further acknowledge the lasting impact his work and dedication has had on the sector.

We were thrilled to recently welcome Joe's extend family to CCF SA's Centre for Excellence, to tour our new facilities and reflect on Joe's life and contributions. CCF SA CEO Jessica Tucker proudly presented the family with a framed copy of the latest edition of Civil Connect magazine, which featured an obituary celebrating Joe's life.

CCF SA’s registered training organisation, Civil Train SA - RTO 45621, has partnered with Renewal SA and the Department for Education, South Australia to deliver a four-week introduction to civil construction program for year 10, 11 and 12 students at Kaurna Plains School in Adelaide’s northern suburbs.

Twelve students graduated from ‘The Paitya Program’ with a white card, supervised learner-driver hours and real-world exposure to the civil construction industry.

For their hands-on experience, the students constructed a practical mud kitchen, designed for fellow students to mix dirt, water, sand and other natural items to simulate cooking, all under the supervision of Civil Train SA’s Trainer/Assessor Annie Hiskey.

The group was also invited for a tour of CCF SA’s Centre for Excellence in Gepps Cross where they controlled simulated construction plant equipment and participated in a working at heights demonstration to gain a feel for the different roles and challenges on a construction site. The program also featured a site visit to Munno Para Downs hosted by CCF SA member civil contractors T & J Constructions.

Are you finding it difficult to recruit and retain skilled workers? You're not alone, it's one of the key challenges facing South Australia's civil construction industry.

CCF SA is hosting a FREE member-exclusive online briefing this Friday on new and emerging workforce pathways that will help employers to attract, train and develop their workforce.

The session will cover:

• Civil Engineering Degree Apprenticeships – a new pathway at Flinders University developed in partnership with CCF SA, commencing in February 2027, which will combine university study with on-the-job experience.

• Semi-skilled migration & gap training initiative – a proposed initiative in partnership with the South Australian Skills Commission to support skilled workforce attraction and address industry skills gaps.

• Industry Accelerated Apprenticeship Program (IAAP) – an accelerated pathway, only available through CCF SA’s GTO, Civil Apprenticeships and Careers Ltd (CACL), which will fast-track civil construction qualifications from 36 to just 18 months.

Safety is paramount in the civil construction industry.

From working around heavy machinery and live traffic to excavation, underground services and changing site conditions, the civil sector operates in environments where strong safety systems, good communication and effective risk management matter every day.

This month is National Safe Work Month, an opportunity for contractors, workers and industry to pause, talk about safety and consider what more we can do to make our workplaces safer and healthier.

Civil Contractors Federation SA is encouraging the industry to use this month to keep the conversation going, because everyone deserves to return home safely at the end of the working day.

A major change may be coming for discretionary trusts which could particularly impact family-owned civil contractors.

Draft legislation is proposing a new 30% tax on the taxable income of many discretionary trusts from 1 July 2028. Sally Storey, Partner at CCF SA member Brentnalls SA, has outlined more about the draft legislation, who may be affected, the impact and the options proposed.
