It's National Volunteer Week, and we'd like to take a moment to thank every single volunteer that keeps this sport going day in and day out at all of our local clubs. From coaches to secretaries, first aiders to race directors, officials to the gourmet chefs you can find in the canteen of every BMX club, all of our cycling disciplines are made possible by the tireless work you all do.

Make it your mission to reach out to the vollies at your club the next time you see them, or shoot them a message today to thank them for what they do. Better still, offer to help them out! Nearly every volunteer role at a club can be assisted by someone with zero experience (all you need to get started is a Working With Children Check!) and bike racing is so much more enjoyable when you get to be part of the team making it happen for the rest of the community.

With that in mind, we'd like to share a submission from the Gawler BMX Club recognising committee member Jess Boxall!

"Like many parents in the BMX community, Jess Boxall became involved in the sport through her children after attending a come-and-try session. In 2022, Jess stepped up to assist as a committee member during a transition period for the club, when several members were stepping down and few people were available to fill the roles.

Since joining the committee, Jess has been influential across all areas of club operations — from training sessions and race nights to the extensive behind-the-scenes work that comes with being a committee member.

Around 2024, Jess and her family relocated to Queensland. In a true show of dedication to the club and community, Jess chose to remain on the committee as Secretary while balancing life as a parent to three school-aged children, work commitments, being a supportive wife, involvement in her children’s other sports, and continuing to attend BMX training and racing in Queensland.

Despite the distance and competing commitments, Jess remains heavily involved in the behind-the-scenes work that continues to help drive the club forward."

What's the difference between your favourite Finnish Formula 1 driver and your average local cycling enthusiast? Valtteri enters his bike races more than 4 days before they close!

On a slightly more serious note, only 70 of the 200 entries we have so far for next weekend's Gravel National Championships are from SA-based riders, with the overwhelming majority of people coming from out-of-state to test their mettle against the country's best. If you're planning on racing in a little over a week, what's the hold up? Get your entry in now!

If you're not planning on racing next weekend at Mt Crawford, let us bend your ear for a second: the Ponderosa Pines Gravel Race is gonna be great, and it doesn't matter if you're a world-class gravel privateer or just a regular person who likes to ride their bike. For the latter, we've got a recreational ride (the Ramble!) that you can take as long as you like to complete one lap of the 50km course, and in that 50km you'll pass an Aid Station loaded up with PURE Nutrition & Hydration products AND the event area & carpark at about halfway just in case you think 50km might too far in one go.

For the discerning gravelleur this race has got just about every kind of surface you could test your off-road skills against, more food & drink than we had last year, a handful of bike brands and distributors including our friends at Giant Adelaide coming out to show you their finest wares, and two full days of hanging out in a forest. Oh, and did we mention Bridge Road Brewers will be there too?

Now is the time - get your name on the start list for next weekend's 100 Mile Classic put on by Mt Gambier Cycling Club - Home of the 100 Mile Classic!

Saturday's race is one of the oldest road handicaps in the country, on a new course that makes the feed zone more accessible (same place on each lap!) and the same WILD finish right in the middle of town coming down off the mount that you have to see to believe. Juniors get a two stage day on a 10km course that tends to get plenty of kids from over the border to race against.

Sunday is our State Kermesse Champs around arguably the best short road circuit in the state, a rip around the Blue Lake that always delivers the goods.

Both days of racing are open until Tuesday but do the club a favour and enter now so they don't have to spend the next three days wondering how many people will enter in the last 15 minutes 🙏
