George Town Youth Impact Council

George Town Youth Impact Council We are the youth voice of George Town, with a finger on the pulse of state and national influences.

About the Youth Impact Council:
The George Town Youth Impact Council is made up of individuals aged 12-25 that live or attend school in the George Town municipality and that have a heart to help shape a positive future for all young people in the community. The Youth Impact Council is a partnership between George Town Council and the Future Impact Group and is facilitated by the Our Futures Projec

t Officer. This project is funded jointly between the Tasmanian Community Fund and George Town Council. They are passionate about representing young people about issues, concerns and opportunities that can be generated at a local government level, whilst having a finger on the pulse of state and national influences. The team meet on Wednesday afternoons with a mix of formal and informal meetings scheduled throughout the year. Interested youth can express their interest to join the Youth Impact Council at https://futureimpactgroup.org.au/projects/our-futures/

Today we pitched for funding for a three year project titled Made for More. We’re proud of the work that’s been happening over the last four years, raising youth voices, building their capacity, and advocating for more opportunities for local young people.
But we know more can be done, and we’re keen to address areas that are still needing more investment including year 5/6 Seagulls program, employment readiness for ages 16-19, investment in transport and proudly sharing the narrative of the George town youth. We believe that George Town young people are made for more than just echoing the past, but to change it for the better.

Another Ideas Lab for Seagulls, this time with Satayah leading the group discussions around how we tackle bullying, a topic that continues to be raised from both the Seagulls crew and the Youth Council. Permission Forms have been handed out for the participants to be part of the July-September program.

As a Youth Impact Council, we are passionate about our future as a Tasmanian community. One of our members Kayleb, had the opportunity to attend the Clean Energy Development Conference in Devonport to explore and understand more about the history of Tasmanian energy, where we’re at as a state and the future outlook.
While there are plenty of viewpoints and opinions on different projects, we commend Kayleb for taking an attitude of learning, curiosity and networking whilst being a local youth voice.

Does Brady make the shot????

Today’s Youth Impact Council meeting included 13 youth, council staff/elected members and a special visit from Tania and Jeremy at Northern Employment and Business Hub!

We’re excited to partner with them to help deliver the George Town Futures Expo in September.

We also had other fantastic discussions around exhibitions, bullying campaigns, funding presentations, youth strategy video creation and Solstice in the Square prep.

And of course, there’s an 8-ball game to wrap up the meeting!

Ok, so 18 youth in an Ideas Lab for Seagulls to Chips is getting pretty full!

Today was about problem solving, but really it’s actually about “Opportunity creation!” The group had 10 seconds to come up with solutions to 10 second problems they brainstormed. But when it came to addressing topics such as youth mental health, something shifted to recognise that more needs to be done in our community.
