Vegan Koulourakia; κουλουράκια

This recipe is extremely easy and fast to make. Whip up a batch of koulourakia to serve with coffee, or as a tasty snack. With hints of orange and cinnamon, these vegan (yes, vegan) cookies are sure to please everyone! Makes about 2 dozen

½ cup sugar
½ cup olive oil
½ cup orange juice
1 tsp. baking powder
¼ tsp. grated orange peel
½ tsp. cinnamon
tsp. cloves
2- 2 ½ cups flour, sifted
In a bowl, beat sugar, oil, orange juice, and baking powder. Add peel, cinnamon, cloves, and 2 cups of flour; mix well. Add as much of remaining flour as needed for a medium soft dough.

Pinch off 1 inch pieces of dough and roll into koulourakia shape- roll out long then twist at midpoint into braid like shape. Place on ungreased baking sheet, sprinkle with sesame seeds.
In place of an egg wash you may like to brush lightly with vegetable oil or melted vegan margarine then sprinkle sesame.

Bake at 350° F for 20 minutes, or until done. Cool on wire racks. Credit Norwood Pr Ilias
