With R U OK Day coming up next Thursday, tonight our Cubs and Scouts spent the session getting ready for it - with some meaningful conversations with each other about what’s actually going on in their lives, and each member made a small token to keep somewhere visible as a reminder of what helps them on a tough day.

Good questions are worth practising. ruok.org.au has more resources if you want to keep the conversation going. 🐺 💛

💧 Tonight our Cubs and Scouts got hands-on with water conservation and thinking about where water goes, how much gets wasted without us noticing, and what it actually looks like when those small household habits add up over a year.

For instance, did you know according to the WWF, it takes around 2,700 litres of water to produce a single cotton t-shirt? We're surrounded by water use we never see!

This week was Science Week at 1st Barwon / 2nd Geelong 🔭 and we gave our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts three engineering challenges to get their teeth into.

Spaghetti towers, paper planes and a raw egg dropped from height with nothing but straws, tape and ingenuity to protect it. Some eggs survived. Some didn’t - but all of it involved a lot of thinking, brainstorming, rebuilding and laughing. 🥚

Happy Science Week! 🧪 🧫 🧬 🔧

Tonight our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts got their hands on some timber and built birdhouses. 🐦 Everyone set their own goal for the night — some wanted to get comfortable with a new tool, some were thinking about the structure and how it all holds together, and some were already planning where theirs was going to go!

Some have taken theirs home to paint or stain, and others will bring them back in a few weeks to finish off. We look forward to seeing them housing some beautiful birds soon!

This week our Joeys, Cubs and Scouts picked up a needle and thread - for many of them, for the first time - working on sewing techniques and attaching badges to hessian bags. Sewing is one of those skills that sounds simple until you're actually doing it! 🪡

There was a lot of concentration, varying degrees of success, and everyone walked away with something they made themselves. Turns out the knots we've been tying for the last two weeks translate pretty well to thread. 🐺

🌿 Congratulations to our Group Leader Greg, who today was awarded the Silver Wattle — one of Scouts Australia's highest recognitions for adult members in active leadership roles!

The Silver Wattle is awarded for outstanding service to Scouting, consistently delivered at a high standard over time, with outcomes that make a genuine difference to the movement. It's not handed out lightly.

Greg has given an enormous amount to Scouting and this recognition is well deserved. Congratulations, Greg! 🐺

This week our group worked through a number of knots and lashes in order to progress our Bushcraft (Pioneering) work across all sections (after a pretty epic game of Bootball)! 🪢

We also had a big badge night across Aquatics, Camp, Bushcraft, Bushwalking and more - a lot of hard work from the term recognised all at once. Well done to everyone who earned and recieved badges! 🏅🐺

Today is National Tree Day which Planet Ark's annual call for Australians to get outside, get their hands dirty, and give something back to the environment. 🌳

This year marks 30 years of the program. Since 1996, over 26 million trees have been planted by communities across the country through National Tree Day events.
For Scouts, every day is a bit like Tree Day! We spend a lot of time in the outdoors, and a big part of what we do is learning to understand, respect and care for the environment around us. 🌿🐺

Tonight our Cubs and Scouts swapped the hall for the pool with an aquatics night at Leisurelink. Everyone worked through their Outdoor Adventure Skills in the water, from basic water safety knowledge through to swimming distances, floating and treading water. 🏊 With members across different stages and levels, it was a good individual challenge for everyone!
