Environmental groups who have been campaigning for years are celebrating the announcement that the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) has declared second-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) a restricted chemical product.

This means these commonly available poisons will now only be sold to licensed operators, such as professional pest controllers.
First-generation anticoagulant rodenticides (FGARs) will remain commercially available.

The concern with SGARs is that they persist in the bodies of poisoned rodents and do not break down quickly. This means that any animal that comes along to feed on a poisoned rat or mouse can also be affected.
Anticoagulant rodenticides work by preventing blood from clotting, causing rodents to die from internal or external bleeding, typically 5–10 days after consuming a lethal dose. Nasty stuff!

Unfortunately, native wildlife, including reptiles and birds such as owls and raptors can receive lethal or crippling doses when they consume poisoned rodents.

Wildlife-friendly alternatives 🐦🦎

If you need to manage rats or mice around your home, there are safer options that reduce risk to wildlife:

• The RSPCA recommends reliable and well-designed trap Snap traps which should be checked daily.
• Encourage natural predators such as owls by protecting habitat and installing nest boxes.

🌱 Every wildlife-friendly choice we make in our gardens helps protect our native species.

Another fantastic Design Your Own Garden for Wildlife Workshop held last weekend at the National Wool Museum, Geelong! 🌿🐦

Part of the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition celebrations, the workshop brought together a wonderful group of participants keen to learn how to create wildlife-friendly gardens in their own patch.

Led by Geelong Gardens for Wildlife Chair Dr Georgina de Beaujeu and volunteer Bella Scott, with support from our amazing volunteer team, the session was full of great conversations, learning about Indigenous plants, and meeting new friends.

Participants walked away with a garden plan, ready for action!

Thanks to everyone who joined us and brought such energy and enthusiasm!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from all the folk here at Geelong Gardens for Wildlife!

A heartfelt thank you to all our partners this year, Bellarine Catchment Network, Gardens for Wildlife Victoria, the City of Greater Geelong, Barwon Water, Tract Consultancy, genU Community Nursery, and the Pivotonian Cinema for hosting our first fundraiser.

To our wonderful volunteers, who generously give so many hours of their time to keep Geelong Gardens for Wildlife afloat, and of course to our incredible community — the Geelong residents who have enthusiastically embraced the program by booking garden visits, participating in our online community, attending workshops, helping out on planting day at the Pollinator Garden, or attending our fundraiser, thank you.

What a massive year it has been. There is so much to celebrate and much to look forward to.

Geelong Gardens for Wildlife will now be taking a well-deserved break, but we will be back in early February 2026.

Until then, have a safe and restful summer holiday period, and happy habitat gardening!

A big thank-you to everyone who joined our second ever Geelong Gardens for Wildlife Workshop over the weekend, what an enjoyable way to spend a wet Saturday morning!

Participants worked through a series of exercises to create their own garden concept plans, uncovering unique opportunities to increase habitat and support local wildlife.

Everyone left with a concept plan, new knowledge, and plenty of resources to kick-start their habitat garden.

Best of all, we had the chance to meet new like-minded people and share our love of gardening and plants!

A heartfelt thank you to our hosts, Georgina and Bella, for their wonderful presentation, and to all our GG4Wildlife volunteers for helping out on the day!
