The best approach? None.
None at all.

I want a dog to feel safe.
Secure.
To understand, clearly, that I am no threat.

And the quickest way to do that?
Take the pressure right off.

No reaching. No leaning in and no stepping into their space.

Because the moment you move toward them, or bend down in an attempt to connect with them, you’ve already changed how it feels for them.

Dogs don’t need us to prove we’re friendly.
They need us to be non-threatening.

There’s a big difference.

And this isn’t just about them.
It’s about you too.

You may know nothing about this dog. That matters.

If you crouch down right in front of them, you’ve just put yourself in a compromised position.

Your centre of gravity is now off.
Your movement will then be slower.
Your ability to step away quickly is reduced.

If this dog reacts?
You’ve lost those crucial seconds and your face is right there directly in front of theirs.

So, try this instead

Turn your body.
Stay upright.
Give lots of space.

Let them decide if they want to come closer.

Because the clearest and best message you can send a dog is this:
I’m not here to pressure you.

⚠️ WARNING – PAPP Poison in Use ⚠️

PAPP (fox bait poison) has been located around the Barwon Heads Bluff area in the last couple of weeks. Extreme caution should be used when walking dogs in the area. 🐾

⚠️ Baits are highly toxic if ingested
⚠️ Can be moved by wildlife
⚠️ Areas are usually signposted, but pets can still find them

Fred was one of the lucky ones—after going for a walk in the area, he collapsed and was rushed to our emergency team. Thankfully, the antidote was administered in time, and after responding quickly, Fred is back home and recovering well

👉 If you suspect your pet has ingested a bait or is showing unusual symptoms, seek veterinary attention immediately. Early intervention can save lives

⚠️ Watch for symptoms: vomiting, bloody diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite, dehydration.

Keep your furry friends safe and monitor their health closely!

❗️IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR BDAG CLASSES TONIGHT❗️

CHANGE TO SHOWGROUNDS GATE ENTRY TONIGHT.

The showgrounds management has just advised that gate 2 (our usual entry gate) will be closed tonight from about 5:30-6pm and we will need to use gate 6 to enter and leave the showgrounds. Gate 6 is the one directly behind the cattle pavilion, entry is from St Albans Rd.

There is a rodeo being held over the weekend and the horses and floats are arriving tonight - they will enter the showgrounds through the racecourse. As we understand it, they are setting up in the central arena.

Apparently, horses and floats will not be near the dog training area. However, campers will also have to enter and exit the grounds through gate 6, and that means they will be driving right beside the pavilion. This presents a TRAFFIC HAZARD for all our class members and dogs.

Please enter and leave via gate 6, and be very conscious of dogs and people using the road near the pavilion. The speed limit in the showgrounds is 10km/hr.

URGENT UPDATE - 6pm CLASSES CANCELLED DUE TO HEAT

Hi Everyone, I’m sharing Cheryl’s email here.

“Hi to everyone training this term,

Todays's weather forecast has been updated to indicate that it will still be 30 degrees at 6pm, and very windy. The cool change is now expected after 6pm. For the earlier part of the evening, our extreme heat policy will be triggered and the 6pm classes have been cancelled. The 7pm and 8pm classes will continue, but please bare in mind, it is totally up to you to determine whether it is in your dog's best interests to bring him/her to class on a warm night. Please give extra consideration if your dog is elderly or has any medical conditions.

Also keep in mind that a cool change can actually occur two hours either side of the forecast time - so keep a watch out.

In summary, for tonight:

all 6pm classes are cancelled

7pm classes continue

8pm classes continue

kind regards,

Cheryl”
