It’s Children’s Week, and this year’s theme is every child’s right to use their own language and celebrate their culture.

For the families we see, that includes every way a young child communicates: a first word in a home language, a sign, a gesture, a picture pointed to with pride.

It’s also close to why Tiny Dots was founded. Our mission is to help infants and toddlers flourish by accessing early intervention, while they’re in their key developmental years.

As our founder Laura puts it: “This Children's Week, we celebrate every child's right to use their own language, culture, and way of connecting with the world. At Tiny Dots, we help families take the next right step early, building communication in ways that honour who their child is and where they belong. Because communication is about more than words. It's about identity, connection, and belonging”

Two first words. Two timelines.

Wondering about your child's development, but haven't called because you don't have a diagnosis, a referral or an NDIS plan? You don't need any of them to book a screening.

A screening is a first step. It's about understanding where your child is at right now, through conversation, observation and play. From there, you'll get recommendations for next steps. If more support could help, those next steps might include a referral to a paediatrician or other specialists, a fuller assessment, or information about NDIS early childhood support. The screening helps point you in the right direction, so you're not trying to work it all out alone. If your GP or another professional has already referred you, that's welcome too.

Some families have a big village. Some have a very small one. Both are worth knowing.

An eco-map is a simple picture of the people and places around a family: grandparents, friends, childcare, playgroup, the GP, your maternal and child health nurse. Seeing it all on one page can show where support already sits, and where a little more could help.

Some people in that circle also see a lot of children the same age as yours. Educators, nurses and playgroup leaders often have a wide view of what's typical, which can help if you're ever wondering about something.

You've probably used AAC today without noticing.

A green walking figure told you when to cross. A symbol on a door told you which bathroom. A thumbs up answered a message without a single word.

AAC (augmentative and alternative communication) is any tool that supports communication alongside or instead of speech. We all lean on symbols every day. When a young child uses a picture board, a visual timeline or a speech generating device, they're using the same idea: a way to be understood that deserves the same respect as speech.

Today is Allied Health Professions Day and we’re celebrating the speech pathologists, occupational therapists and dietitians who support Geelong families at Tiny Dots.

Each brings something different to a child’s first appointments, from play and talking to movement and mealtimes. What they share is time spent getting to know each child and family first.

Before the first words come the first conversations.

Many babies start copying gestures from around 6 months, then begin using them to communicate later in their first year. They tend to arrive across a range of months, not on a set date.

Each one is your baby sharing something with you, and worth celebrating.

National Carers Week starts next week, and it's worth pausing on everyone that actually includes. Parents, grandparents, foster carers, friends and support workers all fit somewhere in that picture. Anyone showing up for the appointments, the routines and the small, repeated moments that add up over time.

It takes a village, and for a family raising a child with a developmental delay or additional needs, that village matters more than most people realise. If you're early in this journey, it's worth knowing support exists well beyond appointments and therapy, support workers, respite and people who simply turn up.

Sometimes that support looks like help around the home too: meals sorted, washing folded, an hour of quiet. When so much energy is going toward appointments and advocacy, that kind of help matters just as much.

There's a wide range of typical timeframes for early communication milestones, and most children move through them in their own time.

If you're worried your child isn't showing the early non-verbal milestones yet, it doesn't hurt to get an assessment either way.

It just means you'll know for sure where things stand. No GP referral needed either to book with Tiny Dots, for children aged 0 to 3. And if it turns out something else is going on, and Audiologist or ENT specialist, a paediatrician or another specialist area entirely, we'll help point you toward the right place.

This is the first step.
