Geelong Philatelic Society

Geelong Philatelic Society Have an interest in stamp collecting??? Geelong Philatelic Society is a club designed especially for people who have an interest in collecting stamps.

The club is open to all ages, new members and visitors are welcome. email: [email protected] We have two meetings per month (except January) in two different locations with two different agendas. On the first Saturday of the month, our formal meetings are held in the Virginia Todd Community Centre in Geelong West. These evening meetings, from 7 p.m., are where we deal with club business.

Our afternoon meetings, on the third Monday of the month, are held from 1 p.m. in the Belmont Library in Belmont, and are more relaxed. Most times we have a Dealer in attendance at these afternoon meetings. There is ample car-parking at both venues, and at both meetings there are always sales sheets for perusal, and time for a cuppa-natter session afterwards. We hold members’ competitions, and talks and displays by both visiting Collectors and members throughout the year. Membership benefits include our newsletter, access to our extensive Library, and, of course, our Circuit Sheets. We also co-host an annual Stamp & Coin Fair in October each year, which brings together Dealers and Collectors from the region.

Notes from the Past:
‘First Glider Flight from Geelong to Melbourne’

Six years after the formation of the Geelong Philatelic Society in August 1931, the club, with the assistance of Mr Percy Pratt, held a fundraiser for the Geelong Free Kindergarten.
Mr Pratt operated a Flying School at the aerodrome on Belmont Common, and Charles Lockie, G.P.S. Secretary at the time, was a keen collector of airmail covers.
Six hundred commemorative covers were printed and sold (one, according to some reports, was addressed to Princess Elizabeth in England) with half the proceeds going to the Kindergarten and half to the Anti-Cancer Appeal Fund.
The flight, on 4 August 1937, was widely reported around Australia.
Although supposed to launch from Belmont Common at 9.30 am, adverse conditions meant Mr Keith Farmer’s Sopwith Gnu didn’t get Mr Pratt’s specially-made Glider airborne until 3pm. The towed flight took one hour to cover the 40-odd miles to Albert Park, with Mr Pratt releasing a homing pigeon 5,000 feet above Melbourne (the pigeon made it safely back to Geelong), then releasing the 800 foot towing cable and making a perfect landing on the Albert Park golf links.
