Erica Kakoschke PNC was one of the 16 inaugural recipients of the Philippa Dean Award for 2026. She was presented with it at Parliament House by Hon Katrine Hildyard MP (Minister for women), James Agness MP (Member for Light) and His Worship Nathan Shanks (Mayor of Gawler).
For Erica it was the recognition of service (23 years) to and an enuring commitment to the Gawler VIEW Club.
Philippa Dean (1854 - 1937) was the first woman in the Commonwealth granted permission to perform the wedding ceremony, 2 years before the suffragette movement, and was also Mayor of Gawler.

136 days ago, on International Women's Day thanks to IWD Committee comprised of a number of leading Gawler women’s groups including the Zonta Club of Gawler, I had the great privilege to announce the inaugural class of Phillipa Dean Award Recipients.

At that IWD breakfast, I promised the sixteen recipients, that I would host them for a reception in the Parliament of South Australia to commemorate the award.

Today, Minister Katrine Hildyard MP and Mayor Nathan Shanks - Town of Gawler along with those incredible women who pioneered female suffrage looking over us, celebrated the incredible contribution these women have and continue to make to our community.

Contributions for which they do not seek recognition, and all too often are unheralded.

I sincerely congratulate each of the recipients for the receipt of their Phillipa Dean Award and I look forward to opening nominations for next year’s Class.

Ally from Aidacare gave us a wonderful talk on all the aids available for Seniors to stay independently in their own home. She had a wonderful time racing around the room in between chairs and table showing us how flexible the light weight electric wheelchair is.
Other interesting items were light weight fold up walkers, the tip kettle and the item to easily open your car door. A visit to their very large show room would be interesting.

Despite Naughty Elf’s best attempts Christmas in July with the Gawler VIEW Club went off without a hitch !

And even better, the event again raised funds to continue to sponsor 14 children supported by The Smith Family.

Spotlight on SA VIEW: 📣

After a week meeting WA VIEW members followed by a weekend touring the south west, National President Lorraine Thomson and National Manager, Maryanne Maher packed their bags and flew to South Australia this morning!

On arrival the pair headed to The Smith Family's Adelaide office for a catch up with SA VIEW National Councillor Bernie (bottom left) and SA VIEW Zone Councillors Michelle and Judy.

It was great afternoon providing information and presentations.

Lorraine and Maryanne are busy preparing for the big week ahead, with the SA Gala tomorrow!
