Just a quick reminder that Gawler Repair Cafe is coming up this Sat, 20 June, from 9.30am-12pm at Gawler Elderly Centre, 37 Fourteenth St Gawler South. The weather will hopefully be clearing up by the weekend, so grab something that needs fixing and come one down!

Our skilled volunteers will be on hand for mending (clothing, textiles), heavy duty sewing repairs (leather, canvas, denim), small electrical, general household items, jewellery, dolls and simple bike repairs like punctures.

No need to book, just pop in with your item (repairers will look at one item per person per session, maybe a second if we aren't busy). Our services are provided free of charge or by donation, with coffee, tea and cake provided while you wait.

Our June weekend opening is this Sat, the 13th, from 10am-1pm. The weather looks to be wet, but we can warm you up with a cup of soup and a cosy craft activity: making macrame keychains from T-shirt string.

You can also pick up resources about local flora and fauna, sustainable gardens, home energy efficiency and waste management, take a look at our bushfood garden and find out about upcoming events and projects.

*Shout out to Maureen Short who supplied the craft idea and cut up the T-shirts!

Friends in the Mid-North you might like to attend this workshop about the eastern long-necked turtle at Narridy on Wed 27 May. Their numbers are declining and help is needed to collect information to inform recovery efforts.

Presented by Northern and Yorke Landscape

Did you know South Australia only has three species of freshwater turtle? 🐢

The eastern long-necked is the one you're most likely to spot around the Mid North region. It's often called a "stinker" because of the smell it releases when startled. Charming, right?

The not-so-charming part? Turtle numbers are declining across the state. Foxes are raiding nests, habitats are shifting, and there's still a lot we don't know about where populations are at.

Join us at Narridy alongside turtle and waterways experts for a hands-on workshop. You'll learn to identify species, spot signs of nesting, and log sightings using the TurtleSAT app. We'll also be installing a Biohaven Island on the day, a floating habitat designed to give turtles a safe place to nest away from predators.

Wednesday 27 May | 10:00am – 12:30pm | Narridy

This workshop is part of a new project called Together Understanding and Recovering Turtles in our Landscapes and Ecosystems (TURTLE). Information regarding this new project is available at: https://flow.landscape.sa.gov.au/turtle-project
