International Humanitarian Law Volunteers of the ACT

International Humanitarian Law Volunteers of the ACT The IHL Volunteers of the ACT is a proactive group committed to championing the principles of International Humanitarian Law.

The IHL Volunteers of the ACT was founded in 2013 by a group of Red Cross Officers and Volunteers committed to the promotion, development and protection of International Humanitarian Law (IHL). What is International Humanitarian Law? The idea of IHL is simple: even wars have limits. Also known as 'the law of war', IHL protects people who are not taking part in the fighting, such as civilians, woun

ded soldiers, prisoners of war, and military medical personnel. These people are entitled to respect for their lives, and parties to a conflict must provide them with assistance and treat them humanely at all times and without discrimination. For IHL to be useful in times of war it must be understood during times of peace. Australian Red Cross runs training courses and events for the general public as well as members of the Australian Defence Force, Federal Police, the humanitarian sector and other relevant organisations. Australian Red Cross is also the custodians of the red cross, red crescent and red crystal emblems. Because the emblems need to be instantly recognisable as a symbol of protection during armed conflict, there are strict rules governing their use, including in Australia.
