LLL Perth SOR meets monthly in the Fremantle area. Check our events for dates, times and locations. La Leche League International (LLLI) is a not for-profit organisation recognised by UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO) as a world expert in the field of breastfeeding. It began in Chicago, 1956, a time when breastfeeding rates were at an all time low, and 7 mothers figured out that breas
tfeeding their babies was easier and more enjoyable when they talked about it with friends. So they began to meet regularly and chose a code name (because the word 'breastfeeding' was shocking in those days) La Leche (Spanish for "the milk") League. The group grew and multiplied, in 1958 the women wrote a short pamphlet which they turned into a book in 1963, and ultimately became an international best seller; The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is now in its 8th edition and continues to be as cherished and vital to breastfeeding families today as it was over 50 years ago. Today, LLL gatherings are held in over 85 countries across the globe, from Bolivia to Bulgaria, South Africa to Singapore. In Australia we have leaders in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth and our communities are growing every day. Leaders are mothers/parents who have nursed their own babies and then decided to train with LLLi to offer support and information to other breastfeeding families. Most of us came to LLL because of difficulties with feeding or because we had previously stopped breastfeeding a baby before we wanted to. We don't give advice or try to tell you what to do, but we can offer a non judgemental listening ear, and provide information and resources to empower you to make choices that are right for you and your family. Who are meetings for? Our meetups are open to all human milk feeding families looking for support, information and community, whether you are pregnant with your first child, are a brand new or very experienced parent. Even if nursing is going smoothly, we would love to have you join us. Having experienced parents at meet ups who can share their story is so valuable; it inspires new parents to know that whatever challenges they are experiencing can be overcome. And at LLL we also know that all parents need support at every stage of their breastfeeding journey, not just at the start. Partners, support people, babies and children are always welcome. What happens at meetups? Our meetings are led by at least one accredited LLL leader either at their home, a community centre or in a public place like a cafe or park. There'll usually be snacks provided and if you can bring something to share it will be very welcome. We understand that sometimes just getting out of the house can be a huge acheivement so there is no expectations on you to have to bring anything or arrive on time. We'll introduce ourselves and our kids and you can bring any questions or concerns to the group that you need support with. Sometimes we'll talk about a topic if there is time, but usually we are too busy just chatting! Why come to an LLL meeting? Families come together at LLL gatherings to celebrate, laugh, cry and learn from one another. They may share some technical advice, but mostly they talk about their daily breastfeeding experiences; life with a new baby, how to get a reasonable night's sleep, what solids to offer a breastfeeding toddler, what to say to doubting relatives. It's that sharing of experiences, and the feeling of community that inevitably develops, that is at the heart of every LLL gathering. At LLL because breastfeeding is recognised as the normal way to feed a baby, difficulties are just something to resolve in order to keep that normal process going. So whatever your question or concern might be, we will try to help you in a way that keeps the "normalness" of breastfeeding in mind. We also know that every family is unique and there is no one "right" way to breastfeed, so whether you are breastfeeding, chestfeeding, using an SNS or bottles, however your family is made up, whatever your background, we would love to support you. How much does it cost? LLL is run entirely by volunteers and all meetups and one-to one support provided by leaders on social media, phone, e-mail or face to face is free. If you would like to make a donation towards covering the running costs there will be collection pots available at our meetings or you can show your support by becoming a member of LLL here: https://www.lllasia.org/membership.html
LLL Library:
LLL has an excellent and extensive range of books and leaflets on birth, breastfeeding and parenting available to borrow. This service is free for all parents who regularly attend our meet ups, or you can make a donation of an amount of your choosing, should you wish to contribute to the group running costs. The list of books available can be found in the "menu" section of this page. If you would like to borrow something please send us a message in advance so we can ensure it is available for you at our next meet up. Books can be borrowed for up to 4 weeks or we may be able to extend this if there is no waiting list on that title. Can't Make the Meet Ups?
