Friends of Clontarf Hill WA

Friends of Clontarf Hill WA FoCH is a community organisation that has been working together since 1992 in the Fremantle Area, WA Please see our website or email us for further information.

Friends of Clontarf Hill has recently become a registered charity organisation and all donations are tax deductible. Clontarf Hill is an important natural remnant in the social surroundings of the Fremantle/Hamilton Hill area. The Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage has listed Clontarf Hill as a Registered Aboriginal Site. The dominant canopy on Clontarf Hill is the tuart (Eucalyptus gompho

cephala). The tuart woodlands and forests of the Swan Coastal Plain were included on the Critically Endangered list of threatened species and ecological communities under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act in July 2019. Friends of Clontarf Hill (FOCH) in partnership with the Cockburn Community Wildlife Corridor (CCWC) and the City of Fremantle have been successful in securing a number of Community Stewardship Grants from the State Natural Resource Management Program. This has provided us with resources to address woody w**ds and undertake revegetation. The South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare (SERCUL) are working with us to complete this project and the City of Fremantle is supporting the grant with w**d control prior to planting. FOCH are vigilant in looking after the area and demanding that Clontarf Hill and the surrounding bushland area be retained as local open space (as proposed by the City of Fremantle). Clontarf Hill connects the coastal reserves to the residential hinterlands to the east. It also connects the Manning Park ridgeline and wetlands northwards to Fremantle’s remnant valley and ridgeline parks. It is open space of regional significance that should be recognised as a Parks and Recreation Reserve in the Metropolitan Region Scheme (MRS).

Exciting to see the old warehouses all gone and the new Nara development underway. Having consulted extensively on their planting plans we can’t wait to see how they link Beaconsfield Quarry to Clontarf Hill through accessible greenways and a wildlife corridor. Hopefully we’ll get a few new volunteers to help on our Bushcare days with the new residents too! ❤️🌿

ADOPT A PATCH? What do you think? 12yo Sierra has claimed this small section of honey Myrtle and coastal daisy as her own after a solid 30 minutes releasing it from the grips of Fumitory, hopefully in time to stop it from going to seed (which will halve our workload next year!). If you walk the hill regularly consider adopting your own patch and keeping it free from w**ds… even if it’s only a shrub or two, it all helps! Or send us a DM if you’d like to be added to the bushcare group on WhatsApp where we organise regular action days. Bring the kids! It’s a great way to start the day 🙌 🥳

Let’s play… what’s under the fumitory!! This is a nasty, smothering w**d that has the potential to take over if we don’t get it under control. It’s already seeded this year so fingers crossed we can get on top of it next year. In the meantime though, consider releasing a native shrub from its grasp on your next walk, here I found it suffocating a hardenbergia (native wisteria) and flowering Prickle Lily (Acanthocarpus Pressii), an important food source for the little local birds and bugs ❤️

Little friend, big friend, slithery friend 😍 have you ever stopped to appreciate the reptilian highways crossing your path at Clontarf hill? They’re active at the moment!

Release the seedlings! The fumitory w**d has gone NUTS with all this rain and we had some fun pulling it out of the ground to find some flowers underneath today. The bobtail enjoyed being untangled too, much easier for him to find tasty snacks now! We meet fortnightly but today was a bonus day, send us a DM if you’d like to be added to our Bushcare group on WhatsApp for future community help days :)
