Did you know physical activity has many different health benefits for children on the autism spectrum?

Today is and we’re proud to share our support for a new study aimed at increasing physical activity for children with autism in Western Australia.

Through our latest Telethon grant, Associate Professor Timothy Fairchild from Murdoch University will be developing an eight-week personalised exercise program and educational resources for families to boost physical activity for children on the autism spectrum.

Importantly, children and their parents/carers will co-design the program, alongside an Exercise Physiologist, to ensure it meets their unique needs.

Today is where we celebrate incredible women, featuring our very own inspirational team at Spinnaker, Dana Wallace-Campbell, Sarah Taylor, Emma Breidahl, Catia Furtado and Huey Yeo.

Dana our General Manager WA is not just an amazing leader, she’s a guiding compass for our team. With her unwavering commitment to our collective success, she steers us toward our goals with grace and wisdom. We’re fortunate to sail this professional journey with her at the helm. She is also mother to two beautiful children and a pup named Buddy.

Catia our Executive Manager of Operations. In 2009, Catia, the only daughter among four brothers, left a promising managerial position in her career with a film distributor in Brazil to move to Australia. Her goal: to master English, a vital tool for her job success. Now, as the Executive Manager Operations (acting General Manager WA) for Spinnaker, she is living her dream of working in the philanthropy industry. Catia's journey, from rebuilding her career with a Marketing degree and no English to successfully juggling professional achievements with being a mother and wife, inspires many in her circle—showing that, as a woman with an accent away from home, dreams are also achievable.

Sarah, our Partnerships Development Manager, working closely alongside Emma in executing the fundraising strategy for Spinnaker emphasising the growth and management of the corporate and community portfolio. Outside of Spinnaker, she is a mum to a beautiful boy who turns one next month, AND pregnant with her second. She is also currently part-time studying a Graduate Certificate in Business thanks to Australian Scholarships Foundation, with 5 weeks left until graduation in September.

Emma our Executive Manager, Philanthropy, working with our philanthropic donors to support the incredible work of West Australian health researchers in making impact across our local community. Emma lives on a farm near Donnybrook with her husband, daughter, two dogs, 12 chickens, 20 bee hives and 600 Avocado trees!

and Huey our admin all-rounder. A quiet force behind the scenes, she wears many hats but beyond the office our bride-to-be is planning her dream wedding!

Today is and we’re excited to share our support for Dr Marcus Voola at Fiona Stanley Hospital to improve how middle ear implants work.

Programming middle ear implants is complex and subjective – relying on recipients to indicate when the sound is “loud but comfortable” which can be hard for children or those with communication or intellectual challenges.

To combat these pitfalls, this project aims to develop and validate a new programming method that removes this subjective nature and instead uses activity of the brain – a method that’s proven to be effective for people with cochlear implants!

This project is only possible due to your ongoing support. Thank you!

This year we celebrate Rare Disease Day on 29th February – in itself a rare occurrence, given leap years only happen every four years!

In Australia, a disease is considered rare if it affects less than 5 in 10,000 people. There are more than 7,000 rare diseases that are life threatening or chronically debilitating. Around 8% of Australians (2 million people) live with a rare disease. Of these 2 million Australian’s affected, around 80% have a genetic disease.

Rare disease diagnosis can often take a long time because these conditions are complex and doctors do not see them often. Not getting a diagnosis or getting incorrect diagnosis are also common occurrences.

Examples of rare diseases include genetic conditions like cystic fibrosis, Huntington’s disease and Ichthyosis and types of non-genetic rare diseases include cancers, infections and autoimmune disorders.

Spinnaker is proud to have funded a rare disease research project as part of our 2024 Grants. The project is looking in depth at a rare melanoma type, diagnosed in a patient in Royal Perth Hospital. Doctors were not able to treat her melanoma and she died 10 weeks after her initial diagnosis. Primary brain melanomas are incredibly rare and account for less than 1% of melanoma cases, meaning there is little opportunity to study them.

Lead project researcher Dr Yu Yu hopes that the research into this one patient, will have the ability to create priceless knowledge that in time, will ensure a different outcome for those with the same rare melanoma diagnosis.

You can support Spinnaker’s ability to fund projects like this one into rare disease, by donating here: hospitalresearch.org.au/spinnaker

World Cancer Day held on 4th February, and 2024’s theme is to Close the Care Gap.

In December 2023, Spinnaker Health Research Foundation was proud to award 2024 Grant recipient – Dr Collin Chin, based out of Rockingham General Hospital, for his project on an emerging new treatment for blood cancers called CAR T-cell therapy.

Approximately 2134 West Australians are diagnosed with blood cancer annually, with 655 patients expected to lose their lives. Immune effector cell (IEC) therapies such as chimaeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy and bispecific antibodies are the newest weapon against the commonest blood cancer, lymphoma, and can cure 1 in 2 patients who would have died with standard treatments.

Thank you to Fremantle Rotary and Rotary Club of Attadale for your generous donation and investment into cancer research in WA.

Dr Chin’s project uses a technology called flow cytometry to study individual blood cells to understand how and why the immune cells get tired. This will help develop new ideas on how to improve these treatments, like recharging the immune system or finding different ways to give the treatment. Thanks to the Rotary clubs of Fremantle and Attadale’s generous donation, hundreds of patients with blood cancer in WA are set to benefit.

The rotary clubs donation allows to kickstart this project and potentially change how IEC therapies are used in Australia and globally. Dr Chin’s goal is to see as many patients as possible with blood cancer become cancer-free, and the Rotary clubs of Fremantle and Attadale, are now part of this journey. Your contribution to cancer research in WA lays the foundation for this vision to take place, and lays the path for future generations of medical researchers in the South Metropolitan Health Service.

Spinnaker HRF cannot wait to hear about the impact and health outcomes that Dr Chin’s team will set out to achieve.
