Term 2 Week 5 Highlights
Hoops and Bounces, Dinosaurs and Dancers!
18 friends arrived for a session with lots packed in as we explored the themes Balls and Bounces, Dinosaurs and Dancers!
Welcome to the new families, and those coming back for the first time this term!
The dinosaur activities were a highlight across the morning. Dinosaurs were frozen in ice alongside all sorts of natural wonders including leaves, gumnuts, sticks, flowers, pinecones, sheoaks and succulents, creating a beautiful variety of textures and colours. Small hammers and spray bottles were the tools of choice as children smashed and sprayed their way through the cold hard ice.
Nearby in the sandpit, more dinosaurs were trapped in ice and sand so the children used brushes and pipettes in a gentler, more delicate way to help break them free. Dinosaur eggs were also hidden throughout the sandpit, with many exciting discoveries made across the session. Seeing faces light up with curiosity and excitement when eggs were found was wonderful to watch.
The sandpit and swings remained popular throughout the morning, although the weather wasn’t always favourable, making the slide a little quieter than usual today.
We were also invited by Freeling Primary P-6 to contribute to their “All In for Reconciliation” activities. Children came together holding elements from nature to represent that at Playgroup at Freeling, we are all in for kindness, listening, friendship and caring for Country. Together, it symbolised that we all belong. A photo of the children’s hands and nature treasures will become part of the school’s collaborative display piece.
Children enjoyed planting their nature items in the sandpit creating a garden for all to enjoy, and a home for the dinosaurs!
Inside, themed colouring pages were available while the floor mat was set with a collection of wooden musical instruments for children to tap, bang and explore different sounds and rhythms. Wrist ribbons encouraged movement and dancing for children to wave and twirl along to the music being made.
Nearby, coloured baskets and table tennis balls provided opportunities to practice hand-eye coordination through simple bouncing games. Many of our youngest friends had immense fun simply holding, rolling and exploring the balls and baskets in their own ways, highlighting the endless possibilities that can come through play. A collection of dinosaur toys inside also kept many busy in imaginative play.
Before we knew it, it was time to pack away and gather for morning circle. The Freeling Mums Book Club was shared again, with the June book selection announced as The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid. Anyone interested in joining can find more information on the page “Freeling Mums Book Club.”
For our friends, we read Kick With My Left Foot by Paul Seden and Karen Briggs — a cheerful and energetic story about a young boy playing Australia’s favourite game.
With some time still left in the session, we finished the morning with a few group games. Children formed a circle and passed soft balls left and right while a larger ball was rolled across the circle from child to child. Another game inspired by trick shots saw children bouncing table tennis balls into coloured baskets while practicing their coordination as the balls bounced through the group. Both games were opportunities to practice turn taking and the children all did so well.
Lastly, we ended with an Australian animal action game. Children jumped like kangaroos, munched leaves like koalas and snapped crocodile jaws as lots of giggles filled the room.
As usual, our sticker line formed before it was time to say goodbye.
Just a reminder there is no playgroup session next week due to the school pupil free day.
We’ll see everyone back on June 12th for a session inspired by the ocean!
