Community Fridge Update ⚠️

Unfortunately due to illness we have had to cancel our cooking shift tonight.

This means there won’t be a delivery of fresh meals to the Bloom Café Community Fridge tomorrow and please note that Bloom Cafe is closed this week.

We’re really sorry to anyone who was relying on the fridge being topped up, and thank you for your understanding.

💚 We will still be at @ Orwil Street Community House Inc this Saturday for our Community Lunch as usual, and we look forward to seeing everyone there 😊🌱

🌱Announcement! Project Fresh Start is evolving – from food relief towards food empowerment 🎉

After the September school holidays, we will be making some changes to the way we support our community through food.

Our Community Fridges at Orwil Street headspace Frankston and Windana Frankston will begin offering bags of ingredients with simple, easy-to-read recipes rather than our usual ready-made meals. (Think Hello Fresh model but free of course)

Where possible, some ingredients will already be chopped, measured or prepared to make cooking easier and more accessible.

🌱Why are we changing? Because we want food support to do more than solve tonight's dinner.

We want people to have opportunities to build confidence, learn simple recipes, discover affordable meals they can make themselves and develop skills they can use again and again.

We also understand that not everyone has access to a kitchen or is in a position to prepare their own meals.

For this reason, our Bloom Cafe Community Fridge will continue to be stocked with freshly cooked, ready-to-eat meals as we understand this is frequented by our community members experiencing homelessness.

Our Supported Volunteer Pathway Program will continue cooking for Bloom every Wednesday night, and our FLC students will continue cooking meals for their own Community Fridge in the student volunteer program.

Our Community Lunches will remain the same at Orwil Street Community House Inc with a few changes.

We will be simplifying our lunch menus a little, because one of the biggest things we have learned is that the real magic of these lunches isn't the number of different dishes on the table.
It is people sitting together, talking, laughing, being welcomed and feeling part of a community.

Simpler menus will also mean our incredible kitchen volunteers can spend less of the lunch working away in a separate kitchen and more time sitting down and sharing the meal with everyone else.

Because our volunteers deserve to be part of that connection too 🌱❤️😊

As homelessness week comes to an end unfortunately the housing crisis is only getting worse. A big shout out to the people working and volunteering in the homelessness sector and the people advocating for change that are doing the best they can in a very broken system ♥️
While investment in staffing these sectors is very welcome it will not fix the problem without more housing. The sad reality in Frankston is that there is no crisis accommodation, rooming houses are unsafe, unaffordable and unregulated and the very little public housing stock is only available for people over 55 in majority of cases. We need more public housing, the move to community housing and privatisation means that many vulnerable people will fall through the cracks of ineligibility and remain on our streets. We need to do better and prioritise housing as a fundamentall human right 😥🌱

So many delicious meals shipped fresh from the kitchen - my favourite was the Beyond Meat and mushroom meatballs in Napoli sauce 😋
There were quiet spaces to bask in the winter sun as well 🌞
Loved friend of Project Fresh Start; Champ scored a new scarf and he’s looking super stylish 🕺🧣
Our next community lunch will be on Saturday August 29, 12 noon to 1.30pm, the second last day of winter 🥶
