📍Port Vila, Vanuatu

A little while ago, the HADR Institute’s Matilda Gall joined Pacific Guardians HQ to deliver a 2-day workshop in Port Vila for the Vanuatu Association of NGOs – Facility Aiding Locally-Led Engagement (FALE) to develop an Emergency Coordination Centre.

Participants explored:
🔹Disaster response capabilities,
🔹Defined key roles within an Emergency Coordination Centre, and
🔹Worked through real-world challenges in connecting with and coordinating community-based organisation responses during disasters.

Workshops like these are central to our mission: strengthening local capacity to protect life and dignity across the prevention, preparedness, response and recovery phases of disasters. 🕊️

Representing HADR Institute on the ground, Matilda also shared our online training resources, and demonstrated our geospatial intelligence dashboards, showcasing how these tools can support organisations such as VANGO/FALE in coordinating aid and resources. By mapping Vanuatu’s CBO networks, organisations can respond more quickly and effectively, distributing appropriate aid and personnel to those most in need before, during, and after disasters.

Our on-going work in the Pacific is made possible through the support of our Pacific Hub partners Pacific Guardians HQ, Save Our Supplies, and Airlink. We thank them endlessly for their continued support and hard work.

This launch wouldn’t be possible without the continued support of partners at the Asia-Australia Youth Association and the Young Australians in International Affairs (YAIA). From our joint workshop with the AAYA last month and their help with platforming our mid-year internship recruitment, to last week’s masterclass held with YAIA, we are endlessly grateful for the effort and care put in by our collaborators. Thank you!

We look forward to seeing your applications!

📍Honiara, Solomon Islands.

During their recent deployment in the wake of Cyclone Maila, our responders supported local teams in facilitating emergency telecommunications and coordination systems across the Solomon islands.

We are deeply grateful to the local teams in Honiara, the DSE; our Pacific Hub partners, Save Our Supplies and Pacific Guardians HQ; and Airlink, Inc. without whom this work would not be possible. ⭐️

🌐🚨 Operation Update: Crisis Response Support for Cyclone Maila

🌏 Earlier this April, the Solomon Islands was hit by a category 5 cyclone, Cyclone Maila, one of the strongest tropical cyclones to form in the Solomon Sea. The impact was critical – damaging homes, infrastructure, food and water supplies, schools, and health systems – and local response teams needed help.

We had two responders, Mitch King and Matilda Gall, on the ground in Honiara, supporting local teams with facilitating and maintaining emergency telecommunications and coordination systems. Swipe to learn more about the situation, the operation, and what we were able to achieve with our partners.

⭐️ A massive thank you to the teams in Honiara and the DSE for their hard work and diligence; to our Pacific Hub partners, Save Our Supplies and Pacific Guardians HQ, whose partnership made this crisis response possible; and to Airlink, whose logistical support helped get our team where they were needed most. We are infinitely grateful.

We’re able to empower local leaders and communities with your generosity. If you’d like to support our work in the Asia-Pacific, you can donate using the link below.

Preparedness is built in partnership.

HADRI recently worked alongside Development Services Exchange (DSE Solomon Islands), Airlink, Save Our Supplies and Pacific Guardians HQ in the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, supporting the delivery of first aid kits, training 26 civil society organisations, and listening to communities about what effective cyclone response requires.

The conversations were a reminder that disaster response starts long before a storm, with trust, coordination, and local leadership at the centre.
