📬 The July edition of our Pacific Humanitarian Monitor report is now live on ReliefWeb!

The PHM is a monthly open-source summary created by the HADR Institute under the Humanitarian Hub Enablement Program. It works to support and help local leaders in the Pacific Island states and Papua New Guinea plan and establish programs for disaster prevention, situational awareness, and humanitarian coordination and response.

This month's edition covers key findings such as…
🔹 Confirmation of a rapidly strengthening El Niño now active across seven countries
🔹 Reports on deepening drought and food-security pressures in Papua New Guinea, with many provinces at drought alert or above and impacts reaching energy sectors, urban water supply and schooling
🔹 Insights on shifting outbreak outlooks across the region, including the active dengue outbreak in Vanuatu's Shefa Province and the closure of Tonga's outbreak on 31 July

🕊️Today is World Humanitarian Day.

Join us in recognising and appreciating the countless individuals who dedicate themselves to providing care and aid to communities facing crises across the world. Often putting compassion above their own safety, humanitarian workers bring not just help, but also connection and kindness to communities in their darkest moments.

It is the work of local leaders, those who are on the frontlines and are impacted by and responding to these events first-hand, that keeps such systems running and in place during crises. Without them and their work, HADRI would not be able to operate the way it does.

🌏 So to all the humanitarian workers out there, thank you. Not just for the work you do today but for the work you put in everyday.

🔹 Min Aung Hlaing's first state visit to Beijing, where China backed the regime's “full, equal, and constructive participation” in ASEAN and UN mechanisms after 18 cooperation agreements were signed;
🔹 Intensified fighting in Rakhine State as the Arakan Army pushed toward Sittwe, clashing with Tatmadaw forces near Kant Kaw Kyun, War Bo and Taw Kan villages;
🔹 Over 5,300 people still held in online scam centres near the Thai border, with victims reported confined in compounds beyond the reach of enforcement operations;
🔹 A landslide at an abandoned jade mine in Hpakant Township left at least 5 confirmed dead after scavengers were buried beneath a mining waste dump;..and more.

💭Getting started in this sector can be difficult, but it’s far from impossible!

This month HADRI welcomed some new faces on our teams! Watching this new cohort come through with such enthusiasm and such a broad range of experiences and interests is a good reminder that a career in humanitarian work rarely begins with a clear map, but it almost always starts with a keen passion.

📍Nadi, Fiji

Earlier this year, the HADR Institute’s Hannah Stoios travelled to Nadi, Fiji for Airlink's APAC Disaster Logistics Workshop. 📖

📝 The workshop was a chance to listen to local leaders and learn from the coordination and logistics challenges they navigate first-hand during a response.

Over the few days, the workshop:
🔹 Brought together a range of regional partners across humanitarian, NGO, government, civil society and private sectors
🔹 Helped to better understand the coordination and logistic challenges commonly faced during disaster response in the Pacific region.
🔹 Highlighted how cross-sector collaboration is essential to disaster preparedness and relief in the Pacific.
Hannah also had the chance to share HADRI's Q2 Anticipatory Action Forecast Briefing, to help inform early planning and give partners a clearer picture before the next event hits.

🌏 That's the role that HADRI seeks to play. We focus on being a back-of-house partner, to support and resource local responders where we can, and back the people who are already leading.

Because when disaster strikes in the Pacific, it's local responders – community leaders, national agencies, and civil society across the region – who lead the way. They know their communities, their geography, and what their people need.

🚨 Incoming Event! 🚨

UNSW Canberra is holding a talk on Disaster Resilience at Home and Abroad. The conversation will be the third instalment of UNSW Canberra’s ongoing Resilient Australia series.

🌏 💭 This event brings together voices from policy, defence, academia and media to unpack what resilience really means for Australia’s future security in time of global transition. Covering a range of topics from bushfires and infrastructure failures at home, to fuel security and fragile supply lines, and climate-driven humanitarian crises across the Pacific.

Our CEO Mitch King will be sharing insights from HADRI's work across the humanitarian and security environment across the Indo-Pacific, joining fellow expert panellist Prof Jason Sharples (UNSW Bushfire Dynamics) in a discussion moderated by Sarah Ison (Senior Political Reporter, The Australian).

📍Port Vila, Vanuatu

A little while ago, the HADR Institute’s Matilda Gall joined Pacific Guardians HQ to deliver a 2-day workshop in Port Vila for the Vanuatu Association of NGOs – Facility Aiding Locally-Led Engagement (FALE) to develop an Emergency Coordination Centre.

Participants explored:
🔹Disaster response capabilities,
🔹Defined key roles within an Emergency Coordination Centre, and
🔹Worked through real-world challenges in connecting with and coordinating community-based organisation responses during disasters.

Workshops like these are central to our mission: strengthening local capacity to protect life and dignity across the prevention, preparedness, response and recovery phases of disasters. 🕊️

Representing HADR Institute on the ground, Matilda also shared our online training resources, and demonstrated our geospatial intelligence dashboards, showcasing how these tools can support organisations such as VANGO/FALE in coordinating aid and resources. By mapping Vanuatu’s CBO networks, organisations can respond more quickly and effectively, distributing appropriate aid and personnel to those most in need before, during, and after disasters.
