This World Environment Day, we stand with those who know that trees are integral to a thriving urban environment.

🌿 Greenbank Unlocked: Nature & History Tour
📅 Monday 27 July
Part of the Peaks to Points Festival

One of the real highlights from two years ago was the opportunity to explore part of the Greenbank Military Training Area through the Peaks to Points Festival. For many locals, it was the first time seeing “the other side of the de-fence” and gaining a deeper appreciation for the incredible connected landscape surrounding Forestdale.

Discover where history and nature come together on a guided tour of this remarkable site. While designed for defence training, the reserve has also become an unexpected stronghold for wildlife and ecosystems increasingly under pressure across South East Queensland.

With so much currently happening across the reserve and broader corridor conversations continuing, we’re very excited to see this opportunity returning.

Places are limited and expected to book quickly.
RSVP: https://events.humanitix.com/greenbank-unlocked-nature-and-history-tour

Both events are free, though bookings are essential.

How lucky are we.

It is always an honour to represent Forestdale at an event, bringing forward the Conversation on Conservation in urban areas.
Our shared backyard is known for its incredible ecologically sensitive landscape and the critical role it plays in one of SEQ’s largest ‘still’ intact bushland corridors and we get to call this place home. How lucky are we!
Please read the following post for more on the importance of these discussions:

Dear reader, we probably don’t need to state the obvious… it is wet, wet, wet today ☔

Fortunately, the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly vines planted by residents on Sunday just off Paradise Road near Greenwood Lakes absolutely LOVE wet feet.

What a delightful morning.

The gathering felt like a warm community hug and a lovely reminder of what can happen when people simply come together around something positive.

A heartfelt thank you to Wildlife Queensland for their ongoing commitment to helping communities understand why urban biodiversity matters. Matt Cecil was not only a wealth of knowledge on the Richmond Birdwing Butterfly, but also proved very capable at digging holes.

The enthusiasm kids and teens so naturally bring was wonderful to witness and equally to the kid-adults who happily put their hands into the Forestdale soil alongside them. Here’s hoping all 30 vines thrive and grow.

A special shout out also to Gemma, pastry chef extraordinaire, who not only attended but baked beautiful Richmond Birdwing-inspired cookies for everyone to enjoy 🦋

One of the highlights was also revisiting vines planted in 2013, now established, thriving and even providing seed for future plants.

Some facts shared with us:
🦋 The Richmond Birdwing is one of Australia’s largest subtropical butterflies
🦋 It is listed as a threatened species
🦋 It is found only along a relatively small 600km stretch of the SEQ and northern NSW coast, including historically around our region
🦋 Its larvae depend almost exclusively on the Richmond Birdwing vine to survive
🦋 Habitat clearing and fragmentation have significantly reduced wild populations

One of the reminders from the morning was that wildlife does not discern between designated zones and property boundaries. Even a shaded corner of a backyard can help connect habitat corridors. You plant it, and they will come.
Perhaps one day Forestdale may again see Richmond Birdwing Butterflies gliding through our streets. A butterfly so spectacular it can reach around 15cm across, truly must be a sight to behold.

Our next event on 14th June will explore backyard fauna monitoring, including wildlife cameras, conservation technology and tips to uncover the hidden wildlife visiting our own backyards.

The morning was a wonderful collaboration between Wildlife Qld, Bushcare Forestdale, Logan City Council and of course, local residents.

How lucky are we 🌿

🥰Today, we celebrate David Attenborough turning 100 🙏

There would be few people in history who have touched the lives of so many and connected us so deeply with the magic, wonder and fragility of our planet.

Sir David has brought the natural world into our homes, reminding us not only how extraordinary Earth is, but why it is worth protecting.

His message has always been remarkably simple: that humanity is not separate from nature, we are part of it. And with that comes a collective responsibility to care for the living world we all depend upon.

Whether it’s retaining and caring for mature trees, planting native shrubs, allowing a small corner of the backyard to remain a little wild, supporting pollinators, or simply making space for wildlife to thrive - stewardship starts at home. Small actions, repeated across communities, create meaningful change.

So perhaps the greatest birthday gift we could give Sir David is to stay curious, stay hopeful, and make a commitment to protect our planet now. Because every small action has the potential to create a butterfly effect.

Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David and thank you, from all creatures great and small.
