ATHENAEUM LIBRARY TOUR
Join us on the second in our Libraries of Melbourne tours, to the Melbourne Atheneum Library on Tuesday 16 June, and stay for a light lunch or coffee and a chat after.
Hidden above one of Collins Street’s many iconic buildings, the Melbourne Athenaeum is alone in housing the same institution and serving the same purpose for the entirety of its almost 200 year existence. Originally named the Mechanics’ Institution when formed, it has housed the city’s first official library, first art gallery, and was even the venue for town council meetings until the Melbourne Town Hall was built.
We will meet at the front of the Athenaeum Building, 188 Collins Street, just before 11.00am, and the tour will take about 45minutes-one hour. Make your own way there, or join me, Lesley MacLeod, if travelling by train from Yarraville to Flinders Street. Train details are available on enrolment.
All welcome. Just enroll via our website under ‘Courses and Activities’.

SEE US AT THE SUN THEATRE!
U3A is very active in the west - U3A Maribyrnong has 160 members and growing! Our value to the community is huge, with our facilitators and committee providing on average over 20 hours a week of programs at no cost to the community.
We provide people with social connection, learning and friendship – things that bind and strengthen a community. And at last we are being recognised.
The Sun Theatre has made a short film of u3a in the west as part of its local recognition program – and it will be screened in June. So look out for it!

HEALING OURSELVES - AND THE PLANET
This series of talks is delivered live via Zoom twice a week by Dr John Beaney, a retired medical practitioner with 50 years experience.
The classes cover a wide range of issues concerned with how some food damages our personal health, and how industrial agriculture is damaging the planet, turning the land into desert and contributing to climate change. Insights into practical solutions are also presented.
The next session will broadcast on Tuesday 19 May from 9:30am, with a repeat on the following Friday. While it is a year-long course, there is no need to commit to the whole program. A list of Modules will be sent along with the Zoom Log-in on enrolment, and you’ll be free to come and go as you wish.
Hoping to see you there then. Just enrol on our website under ‘courses and activities’. And if you need help with using Zoom contact [email protected]

MEMBERS’ MUSINGS - ITALIAN CLASS VISIT
For the last lesson in April, the Digman Reserve Italian Classes swapped textbooks for trolleys and baskets and headed to Mediterranean Wholesalers in Brunswick for a practical language lesson. They moved through the aisles asking questions like “Quanto costa?” and “Avete questo in piccolo?”, sometimes confidently, sometimes with a bit of creative improvisation and a few hand gestures. The staff were patient and helpful as the group tested their Italian in real-life situations.
Baskets soon filled with pasta, olives and a few treats, and the class gathered for coffee to compare notes. There was a mix of Italian and English in the conversation, along with plenty of laughter about what worked and what didn’t. It was a relaxed and enjoyable way to practise the language—and a good reminder that learning often goes best with a bit of food and company.
