Next In Colour is a ground-breaking initiative run by a team of African creatives. “Why Next In Colour? It’s going to be in colour!”

We make space that reflects the communities we come from, and we are able to call our own, ensuring that we continue to create a map for the next generations to come. Because the next generation, the next great Australian piece of art, the next great exhibition, the next great production is going to be intercultural.

Tomorrow night, a second script enters the room for the first time.

Written by Mararo Wangai, a Kenyan-born writer, performer based in Perth, and has a passionate interest in diverse forms of storytelling. His work explores the diasporic experience, intergenerationlism and cross-cultural collisions.

Director and dramaturg lead a table read and script discussion. Breaking down the text, questioning the structure, examining the cultural logic that holds the story together is named out loud.

The second script enters The Rehearsal Room: The Design of Life this coming Monday!

Same structure, different world. Another voice, another story, another way of seeing. Read aloud for the first time and brought into conversation with everyone present in the room.

This is where stories breathe. Where characters are built from the inside out. Where the culture comes first and the craft follows.

By the end of the second evening you'll hold two scripts inside your body, questioned them, sat inside their cultural logic, felt where each one pulls you.

Written by Diana Mawusi Quarshie, she is a writer, performer, and deviser of Ghanaian heritage, based in Naarm (Melbourne). Her work moves through identity, ancestry, and return, using performance as a way to honour lived experience and that invites collective reflection.
