A special delivery of 123 letters has brought smiles and a touch of homework to our Footscray home.
Through a wonderful new intergenerational partnership with Footscray Primary School, Year 1 and 2 students put their classroom learning into practice by writing letters to our residents.
The initiative blends literacy with community connection, as the school explained:
“This term, the students are learning to write for authentic purposes as part of our ‘writing to transact’ unit, and our inquiry focus is ‘Places Have a Story.’ We believe a wonderful way to bring this learning to life would be for our students to write letters to some of your residents, allowing them to learn about people's experiences and how places and communities have changed over time.”
The children filled their notes with vibrant drawings, personal stories, and plenty of curious questions. One letter even gave residents a laugh, opening with the big question: “67 67 67, do you know what it is?”
Our residents have embraced the project with enthusiasm, carefully reading each message and getting busy with their replies. Beyond answering questions and sharing their own life stories, they are sending warm messages back, including touching notes like, “I hope I get to meet you one day.”
