In late 2024, the Wildflower Society of WA recognised and rewarded the Shire of Merredin as a 4-star local government under the 2024 Wildflower Excellence Award Scheme as a shire that has a large proportion of its roadsides in very good or better condition.

The Shire is a haven for wildflowers and other native vegetation, and has a Flora Road, Scott Road, which is a riot of colours with a huge diversity of flowering native plants during wildflower season.

Merredin and surrounding areas has fabulous wildflowers – Everlastings, Featherflowers, Hakeas, Grevilleas, Orchids – every much as good as more well-known areas on the northern sand plains.

Visit the Shire of Merredin, drive along Scott Road, and be wowed by wildflowers in red, pink, orange, white, yellow and blue!

Earlier this year, the Wildflower Society of WA recognised and rewarded the Shire of Merredin as a 4-star local government under the 2024 Wildflower Excellence Award Scheme as a shire that cares about, and looks after, native vegetation and particularly wildflowers under its management.

As part of the reward package, the Shire was provided with 200 plants native to the Wheatbelt region, mostly grown by local nurseries. These plants were planted at Roy Little Park opposite the Shire offices in the centre of Merredin on 9 July 2025 by 35 members of the local community, including members of the Merredin Branch of the Wildflower Society and Shire staff.

The plants were protected with guards, and will be watered over the first year with an in-ground reticulation system. This is a major and significant effort from the Shire towards establishing a native garden for all to enjoy, locals and visitors alike, and demonstrates that the Shire is keen to promote and protect local native vegetation.
