Associate Professor Andrew Deans once wanted to work in a plant nursery, fascinated by how small things grow into something far greater.

That same sense of wonder now drives his work at SVI, where he’s advancing cancer and rare disease breakthroughs for those who need them most.

Before they dedicated their careers to medical research, they were children exploring the things that fascinated them most: from dinosaurs and nature, to music and adventure.

Today, they bring that same creativity to advancing discoveries at SVI, helping tackle some of our greatest health challenges.

In kinder, Liz earned the nickname "Dr Wizzy" because she was always the first to rush over with a band aid when a friend got hurt.

Today, she combines her expertise in cardiology with the power of big data to better understand cardiac arrest and improve outcomes for people with heart conditions.

By uncovering patterns hidden within large-scale health data, her work has the potential to inform earlier intervention, improve clinical care and ultimately save lives.

Davis and colleague A/Prof Helen Frazer are leading a cross-disciplinary team at SVI developing BRAIx, an AI-powered tool designed to more accurately predict breast cancer risk.

Bolstered by support from MECCA M-POWER, the program has the potential to support more personalised screening, enable earlier intervention and ultimately save lives.

Behind every breakthrough is a shared purpose🤝

From zookeepers to engineers, their childhood ambitions looked very different - but today they’re working toward the same goal: to help deliver medical discoveries that transform lives.

“Growing up in a very poor family, science became my escape. It gave me hope beyond the hardships we faced each day and inspired me to look up at the stars and wonder about the universe.”

For Dr Jarny Choi, that sense of curiosity still drives him today. Jarny’s research seeks to understand why some people with type 1 diabetes respond favourably to immune-suppressing therapies while others don’t, helping pave the way for more precise and personalised treatments.

From classroom dreams to lab-grown breakthroughs 🧪

Dr Kate Firipis once wanted to be a teacher, inspired by a childhood curiosity about the world around her.

Today at SVI, she’s part of a team working on lab-grown skin that could transform recovery for patients with severe wounds. The goal is simpler healing, with fewer complications, less trauma, and better quality of life for people who need it most.

“When I was little, my Dad used to help me with projects on everything from flowers to ducks and rabbits, and I wanted to be a teacher so I could share everything I learnt. That same curiosity in the world has stayed with me, and I’m now lucky to both learn from experienced researchers and teach students about tissue engineering at SVI.”

Every scientist has a story 📖

Whether they always dreamed of working in medicine, or imagined becoming zookeepers and palaeontologists, each of our researchers started with a curiosity about the world around them.

Today, that curiosity is driving discoveries in cancer, diabetes, bone health and more at SVI.
