The Melbourne Composers’ League is a non‐profit organization with charitable status, which works with national and international organisations that are interested in promoting the indigenous and contemporary art music of Australia in an Asian‐Pacific context. It was formed principally to further the interests of composers working within Melbourne and regional Victoria, but has expanded to include
associate members from interstate. The Melbourne Composers’ League creates idealistic and inspiring projects of the highest artistic calibre and is affiliated with the Asian Composers’ League, which is the most vibrant and active contemporary music organization in the Asia-Pacific region today. Since its inception in 1997, the Melbourne Composers’ League has presented 446 works in concerts comprising 346 compositions from Australia, 81 from the Asia‐Pacific region, 12 from Europe, 4 from Latin America and 3 from USA. Thirty-seven concerts have been presented which juxtapose the music of Australia with that of another country including music from Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Romania, Sumatra, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey and USA. Many of these concerts have been recorded and broadcast nationally on radio stations ABC Classic FM and 3MBS Fine Music to a wider audience. In 2001, the Melbourne Composers’ League presented ‘Federation Music Week’ with sixteen concerts and four seminars involving Asian Pacific and Australian music, to create a forward looking relationship for Australia with its neighbouring countries for coming years. In this event, as in most of our concerts, the composers were invited to come to Melbourne to meet Australian composers, musicians and audiences. In 2008, the MCL and independent producer Anna Monea presented ‘Below the Star‐Stretched Sky’ – a concert of new music for trombone and string quartet from Australia and Korea featuring Barrie Webb and Silo String Quartet at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, New York, USA.
