I gave myself an extra day away from development this week, and it turned out to be exactly what I needed.

The body was tired. The mind was tired. And while my instinct is often to push through, I've learned that stepping away can sometimes be just as valuable as showing up.

With a little distance, things feel clearer. Ideas that felt stuck are beginning to resurface, solutions are revealing themselves, and I'm finding myself genuinely excited to get back into the studio to continue developing both the movement and sound for the work.

It's a reminder that creativity doesn't always happen when we're forcing it. Sometimes, it needs space. Sometimes, it needs rest.

Distance really can make the heart grow fonder, and in creative practice, it can also bring clarity.

Join us for Open Mic Lab — a creative workshop where young people can explore spoken word, creative writing, voice recording, and sound creation in a fun, supportive environment.

Inspired by Sheena Chundee's current work Fractured Echoes, participants will create their own spoken word piece, experiment with creative writing prompts, and work alongside a musician creating beats and soundscapes using electronic music equipment.

Whether you love writing, performing, music, or storytelling, this is a chance to express yourself, build confidence, and try something new.

No experience is necessary. Just bring your ideas and curiosity.

Teachers, schools, and youth and community organisations: If you'd like to bring Open Mic Lab to your community, we'd love to hear from you. The workshop can be adapted to support literacy, communication, creative thinking, and performance outcomes while giving young people meaningful ways to connect with the arts.

What happens after young people decide they want a career in the creative industries?

This afternoon, Rebel Stepz Arts delivered a creative industries workshop for students interested in exploring pathways into the arts. Through project pitching, mock event planning, networking activities, and industry-based problem solving, students were encouraged to think beyond their creative practice and consider how ideas become real-world opportunities.

Many emerging creatives are taught their craft, but far fewer are taught how to build a sustainable career around it. Understanding how to pitch an idea, identify collaborators, approach organisations, build professional relationships, and create opportunities for yourself are essential skills for the next generation of artists and creative practitioners.

These are the foundations of the Rebel Stepz Arts Mentorship Program, which has been developed to support young creatives, emerging artists, and students seeking practical insight into the creative industries.

Whether delivered in schools, universities, libraries, councils, youth services, or community organisations, these workshops are designed to build confidence, industry knowledge, entrepreneurial thinking, and creative leadership.

Because sometimes the difference between a great idea and a successful project is simply knowing where to start.

Just two sessions left in my 10-month residency with Creative Brimbank.

This has been one of the most rewarding residencies I’ve had, full of learning, connection, challenges, growth, and real progress on the work.

A special thank you to , who does an incredible job supporting artists and the community. Her encouragement and commitment to creative practice have made a lasting impact.

While rehearsals will continue beyond the residency, I’m genuinely sad this chapter is coming to an end. In fact, I’m quite emotional about it.

I suppose that’s a sign of just how special the experience has been.

What stories live beneath the surface?

As part of The Intersectional Narrative Lab, we'll be exploring identity through movement, creative writing, discussion, and sound.

Participants will experiment with simple movement prompts, reflective writing exercises, and one of my favourite creative processes — transforming words into sound. Together, we'll play with voices, phrases, rhythms, whispers, and spoken reflections to create a collective soundscape inspired by our experiences.

You'll also gain an insight into the creative development of Fractured Echoes, my new multidisciplinary work exploring identity, perception, and the fragmented self in the digital age.

No dance, writing, or performance experience is needed. Just bring yourself, your curiosity, and a willingness to explore.

Two very different development days this week.

One day spent moving, improvising, and choreographing. The next spent building sections of the sound composition and shaping the atmosphere of the piece through audio.

Developing independent creative work means constantly switching between different roles and creative mindsets. One moment I’m fully in the body. The next I’m sitting with headphones on analysing rhythm, texture, and structure.

It can be challenging moving between those different modes, but I also love how each layer begins to inform the other as the work slowly evolves.

I am grateful for the space to keep experimenting and developing the piece.

A small glimpse into my development process with Creative Brimbank.

This week I’ve been working on a section of the piece using very simple movement material, directing the choreography toward one corner of the stage and exploring how subtle shifts in focus, repetition, and intention can begin to build meaning.

Today, one of our Rebel Stepz Arts instructors delivered a Creative Arts Mentorship Workshop in Sydney for young people looking to step into the creative industries.

The session explored creative pathways, building confidence, navigating the realities of working in the arts, developing original ideas, and understanding how creative skills can translate into real opportunities and sustainable careers.

Through open conversation, creative exercises, and industry insight, participants were encouraged to think beyond traditional pathways, embrace their individuality, and gain practical tools to support their next steps creatively and professionally.
