Aboriginal Housing Victoria

Aboriginal Housing Victoria AHV’s vision is to ensure that Aboriginal Victorians secure appropriate, affordable housing as a pathway to better lives and stronger communities.

Aboriginal Housing Victoria is a not-for-profit, independent Aboriginal community housing organisation, providing culturally safe, affordable and secure housing to nearly 5,000 Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and families across Victoria. In addition to being the largest Aboriginal Registered Housing Agency in Australia, AHV is the lead agency for Victoria’s Aboriginal housing and

homelessness policy, Mana-na worn-tyeen maar-takoort. As the housing policy lead in the Aboriginal community, AHV has dual roles to hold the Government to account in securing the resources and reforms to implement the policy, while we support sector development to empower Victoria’s Aboriginal community to determine its chosen housing future.

Today is Mabo Day, and this is Mer Island in the Torres Strait. The home of land rights activist and proud Meriam man, Eddie Koiki Mabo.

Mabo Day is celebrated on the 3rd of June to commemorate the efforts of Mabo, and members of the Mer community, in their monumental fight for land rights against the High Court of Australia.

Today we celebrate the abolishment of Terra Nullius (meaning ‘land belonging to no-one’), the passing of the Native Title Act 1993, and we recognise Mabo's long lasting legacy.
