Last chance to put a submission in to protect the Martuwarra Fitzroy River. The Pastoralists and Graziers Association have said it’d be great to have cotton there and there’s 160,000 hectares of land for irrigation. Gina Rinehart said she wanted 325 billion litres of water every year and the Harris Family of Gogo have said they want 50 billion litres of water a year. Then there’s Black Mountain wanting billions of litres for fracking.

Billionaires, oil and gas frackers and agri-buiness want billions of litres of water out of the Kimberley's Martuwarra Fitzroy River and surrounding groundwater and they will get it for free if we don't act now.

Martin Pritchard, Executive Director of Environs Kimberley says -

"We've got a once in a generation chance to protect the river and surrounding groundwater from corporate interests. We need everyone on board to send in thousands of submissions to the government.

It's the everyday person against the billionaires, its the community against the Texan oil and gas fracking billionaire. We can win but this is a hard fight.

The river of life! The Kimberley’s Martuwarra Fitzroy River flows for over 700km from the uplands of the Gibb River road all the way across to near Halls Creek and down, it’s a massive catchment.

It flows over the plateau through gorges and pumping waterfalls to 40km wide floodplains.

The life it sustains is remarkable. Think Barramundi, critically endangered sawfish giant freshwater prawns.

National heritage listed because of the ancient, living cultural connections and nature.

BUT Gina Rinehart wants to take huge amounts of water out for agribusiness.

The people of the Kimberley see it as a special, sacred place and want it protected. Join us and send a message to the government in the link here and share!

BREAKING: There was a very strong turnout in Broome last night to protest the EPA decision to recommend fracking by Texan company Black Mountain at its proposed Valhalla project – over 130 people came at short notice.

“It’s very clear that people here are shocked and outraged at the EPA recommendation to allow fracking in the Kimberley. This is the worst decision the EPA has made in years. The calls were very strong to the Minister for the Environment Matthew Swinbourn to reject Texan company Black Mountain’s Valhalla fracking project.
The community doesn’t want the Kimberley turned into Texan gasfields and the risk to our clean water, threatened species and the National Heritage listed Martuwarra Fitzroy River is too high. Ultimately the Premier, Roger Cook, needs to take leadership here and ban fracking in the Kimberley like its banned in the southwest and Perth. ” said Environs Kimberley Executive Director Martin Pritchard.

“We will be appealing the EPA’s decision and we expect there will be a record number, people from all over the country are absolutely gobsmacked about this recommendation”
“Our grounds of appeal include that the EPA has failed to adequately assess risks to threatened species, risks to human health and social surrounds, including toxic chemicals, risks of climate change and extreme weather and has ignored advice from the Independent Expert Scientific Committee established by the Commonwealth government.”
