We’re excited to announce the 2025 Annual General Meetings of the Kimberley Land Council, Kimberley Language Resource Centre (KLRC), Kimberley Aboriginal Law and Culture Centre (KALACC), Aarnja and Empowered Young Leaders will be held at Ngumpan Community in the central Kimberley from 12–14 August, with travel days on Monday 11th & Friday 15th of August.

This year is especially significant – it's a KALACC Festival year, and we’re proudly celebrating the 40th anniversaries of both KALACC and KLRC ⚡️ ✊🏾

All members are encouraged to attend 🚗

The Yiriman Project – Old Cherrabun Station – 8th to 10th October

The Yiriman Project held a camp at Old Cherrabun station on Walmajarri Country with 16 young people between 13 and 16 years old, Cultural Bosses as well as support from Nindilingarri Cultural Health. Ngurrara, Gooniyandi Rangers and KALACC staff Dale Cox Target 120 Coordinator and Coordinator for this Camp bought the camp to a sum of over 30 people!

The excitement of getting back on country with the opportunity to go hunting, fishing and learning from their Elders had the young people very excited. With everyone up, packed ready for the Tuesday morning departure.

Tuesday afternoon the young people were tasked with setting up the camp site, given the responsibility of unloading all the trailers, setting up their own tents and swags, setting up the kitchen area and collecting firewood. After a swift set up the Elders, young people and the Rangers headed out to hunt for Bush Turkey and Kangaroo – which was a successful hunt resulting in one of each. Nindilingarri CEO Anthony Collard held the young people’s attention as he demonstrated the traditional way of preparing the Kangaroo to be put in a ground oven and left to cook overnight. The boys were more than willing to lend a hand when it came to digging out the hard packed ground for the oven. With Chicken Stew, Damper and BBQ Bush Turkey for dinner, the boys sat and listened as the Elders told stories and spoke on the challenges of life and the importance of making positive life choices.

Wednesday morning was a quick breakfast before heading to an old cemetery site which was cleaned up by the young people, Tom Lawford and Terry Murray told the story of how they travelled to Vienna to bring the remains of the two people back to their country, the boys sat and listened and paid their respects by making the site look respectable and laying two flowers wreathes.

As the day warmed up the river was the only sensible place to be, hand lines were strategically thrown out and left in the hopes of a big Bulga (Barramundi) while all enjoyed cooling off in the shallows. During this time the boys listened as the men explained their family trees and where their ancestors came from. -

After lunch Jarrod Minniecon - Nindilingarri Spiritual Health Promotional Health Officer ran a session on emotional intelligence the art of letting go of negative emotions. Upon completion of Jarrod’s session, Edward Bridgen - Nindilingarri Men’s Health Promotion Officer began session of comprehensive health checks ups for the young people including s*xual health and discussions around safe s*x. The boys willingly volunteered to have these health check-ups.

Fresh killer was next on the agenda, Terry Murray and the Rangers taught and instructed the young people what each cut of meat was and how to butcher the beast. With all hands-on deck, it was not long before we were all back at camp cooking up the meat on the fire accompanied by some damper. Another night around the fire where the everyone shared their favourite parts of camp, and the boys listened intently to more stories.

With rain rolling in overnight and drizzling in the morning it was a quick breakfast and pack up before heading back to Fitzroy Crossing, the excitement was not over as the rain had turned the track to thick mud. No cars were bogged perhaps only due to the encouragement and cheers from the boys as we ploughed our way safely home.

These camps give the young and old people a profound sense of pride for either teaching or learning about their culture, upholding a sense of place and responsible as these young people being the recognise, they are the next generation of young leaders.

A massive congratulations to the young people for the respect and enthusiasm while on country and a big thank you to the Elders and services who help make this camp happen.

Yiriman Jimpi Rimpi and Lumpu Lumpu Youth Camp (Near Djugeradi Community, 27th - 29th May 2024.

We know it's a little late, but just sharing some of pics, memories and experiences from this camp😎😁😀

Around 40 young men aged between 10 - 18 participated and contributed on this camp, including male students from the Yiramalay studio School. With three Walmajarri elders, Yanunijarra Aboriginal Corporation Rangers and around 10 middle aged Walmajarri men and two workers from the Yiramalay studio school.

We had an overwhelmingly response for the camp, with at least 10 - 12 extra boys wanting to join but had no room to accommodate them, this demonstrates that our young people are wanting and needs more Yiriman type camps back onto country.

During the camp, participants visited cultural significant sites at Lumpu Lumpu springs and listened to stories of the dreamtime creation and historical events of country. The young people had the opportunity to go hunting, making boomerangs and Mukurru (hunting sticks), learning to cut up and prepare killer meat, hunting for kangaroo and turkey and mainly getting away from negative influences in town and social media. We spoke about how important it is to have a strong mind for strong culture in today's world.

Sitting around the campfire telling stories and talking about making positive lifestyle choices, issues and awareness of what it is to be a responsible adult, this was a great way to engage and build rapport with our future young leaders.

Yiriman Men's Coordinator Ismahl Croft, young Walmajarri leader Caston Chunchu and Fitzroy Crossing Target 120 Coordinator Dale Cox conducted a session with cut out of words such as: Perpective, values, respect, self-evolution, Dopamine, Social Emotion Well Being, Mental Health etc with the meanings on a separate paper. Participants then discussed, brainstormed and matched the meanings with the right words. It was a positive interactive session, and the young men gained valuable knowledge. They were also reminded that knowledge is power, and it is essential for your growth and development in today's ever-changing world.

Yiriman Coordinator Ismahl Croft, stated "these on country learning camps provide meaningful value and benefits to ALL participants including adults, such as spiritual and wellbeing healing, diversion from negative substances and activities and urged other key service providers to invest and collaborate to enhance and maximise on country learning.

One of our Yiriman/T120 boys has been attending school permanently since the camp and other engagement, with other young fellas stating and talking about going back to school.

We would like to thank and acknowledge the Fitzroy Crossing FISH outback store and Ghost gum emporium for their generous donation of brand-new Jumpers, hoodies for each participant with also donating Fishing rods, gift vouchers, Footy's for the well-behaved participants. Yiriman and KALACC would also like to thank and acknowledge the following organisation for their in-kind support and contributions for this camp; Nindilingarri Cultural Health Services, Marra Worra Worra, Yanunijarra Aboriginal Corporation, Djugeradi Community, GoGo station (donation of Killer) and the Fitzroy Police.
