Comedy-Drama
Our June film is the quirky comedy, 'Anora'. Written, directed, and edited by Sean Baker, Anora is a 2024 American romantic comedy-drama that puts a sharp, modern spin on the Cinderella fairy tale.
Anora "Ani" Mikheeva is a young stripper living in Brighton Beach, a Russian-speaking enclave in Brooklyn. As the only Russian-speaking dancer at an upscale Manhattan strip club, Ani is introduced to Ivan "Vanya" Zakharov, the spoiled and reckless son of a wealthy Russian oligarch. Ostensibly in the US to study, Vanya spends most of his time partying and playing video games in his family's Brooklyn mansion.

Vanya hires Ani for several encounters and becomes infatuated with her, eventually offering her $15,000 to stay with him for a week and pose as his girlfriend. This leads to a whirlwind romance culminating in a trip to Las Vegas, where the two impulsively wed.

Once the news reaches Russia, the fairytale is threatened as Vanya's parents dispatch his Armenian godfather Toros and his henchmen to New York to have the marriage annulled. What follows is a chaotic and darkly comic unravelling of Ani's dreams, as the brutal realities of class and power close in around her.

Comedy-Drama
Our May offering (tomorrow night) is the Finnish comedy, 'Fallen Leaves' (Kuolleet Lehdet). Written and directed by Aki Kaurismäki, Fallen Leaves is his 20th feature film and a continuation of his Proletariat series. Described by critics as a quirky tale of star-crossed lovers, it is considered a life-affirming gem — capturing both the void of loneliness and the warmth of human touch.
Ansa is single and lives in Helsinki, working a precarious zero-hours contract at a supermarket before moving to sorting recyclable plastic. One night she accidentally meets the equally lonely Holappa, an alcoholic construction worker. Their path to happiness is beset by obstacles — from lost phone numbers to mistaken addresses, alcoholism, and a charming stray dog.

The two, both cocooned in loneliness, almost meet, then do meet, then can't meet, then meet again, navigating familiar complications — bad jobs, booze, and an encroaching outside world full of troubles. A backdrop of radio reports on the war in Ukraine underscores the fragility of their world, yet the film never loses its warmth.

Our Second March offering is the BioPic 'A Complete Unknown' documenting the rise of music legend Bob Dylan. Owing to Good Friday and the Easter Long Weekend, our April Screening has been moved to Friday 27 March.
Directed by James Mangold and starring Timothée Chalamet, A Complete Unknown follows a 19-year-old Bob Dylan as he arrives in New York City's Greenwich Village in 1961, befriending folk legends Pete Seeger and Woody Guthrie and rapidly rising to fame through his singular songwriting talent. Along the way he navigates intimate relationships with figures including Joan Baez and girlfriend Sylvie Russo, participating in landmark cultural moments like the 1963 March on Washington. The film culminates in Dylan's controversial decision to perform with electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, a moment that divided the folk world and cemented his status as one of the most transformative artists in music history.

Historic Drama
Our first March offering is the Brazilian drama, 'I'm Still Here'. Owing to Good Friday and the Easter Long Weekend, our April Screening has been moved to Friday 27 March. We'll be screening the Bob Dylan Biopic, 'A Complete Unknown'.
'I'm Still Here' (Ainda Estou Aqui) directed by Walter Salles is based on the true story of Eunice Paiva, a Brazilian mother whose life is upended during the military dictatorship of the 1970s. When her husband Rubens, a former congressman, is taken by government agents and never returned, Eunice refuses to accept silence as an answer. Over the following decades, she transforms her grief into fierce activism, fighting not only for answers about her husband's fate but for justice and human rights across Brazil. Fernanda Torres delivers a celebrated lead performance, portraying Eunice's quiet, unbreakable resilience across decades. The film is a moving meditation on memory, political repression, and the enduring power of one woman's determination to be seen and heard.

Drama
Our final film for 2025 is a movie adaptation of Claire Keegan's novel, 'Small Things Like These'.
The film is set during Christmas 1985 in Ireland and follows coal merchant Bill Furlong, who discovers disturbing secrets kept by the local convent, specifically regarding the infamous Magdalene laundries where u***d mothers were confined and abused. After finding a girl locked in a coal shed during a delivery, Bill faces a moral dilemma about whether to help or ignore the situation, torn between protecting his family's livelihood and following his conscience. The film, starring Cillian Murphy, is a quiet, understated drama about moral courage and challenging community complicity in the face of institutional wrongdoing. Apologies for the late notice, this one snuck up on us!

We're excited to be screening the locally shot film 'Magic Beach' adapted from Alison Lester's original book. Much of the external filming was done at some very familiar locations.

The film explores the power of childhood imagination and magic, following nine children and a dog who find themselves on the Magic Beach where their animated imaginations come to life. The film combines live action and animation through ten different animators to create a magical world featuring underwater scenes, mermaids, pirates, sandcastles, and otherworldly adventures as seen through the children's imaginative play.

2025 Subscriptions remain at an $60 for the whole year or $25 for 3 consecutive months. Subscriptions are available on the door (cash only) or online using this link: https://www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1349461
