👔 Father's Day is Sunday 6 September — if you're still working out what to do with Dad, here are a few options close to home.

Big breakfast: Arana Leagues Club - Brisbane Queensland is putting on a Father's Day buffet breakfast, 8–10am. Hot and cold spread, juice, tea and coffee. $45 members, $50 non-members, $20 for kids 5–12, under-5s free. Bookings essential — book online or at reception.

Take him for a ride: the Brisbane Tramway Museum in Ferny Grove is open Sunday afternoons 12:30–4pm, and your entry includes unlimited rides on the heritage trams. A good one with the kids.

Roll a few ends: Ferny Grove Bowls Sports and Community Club at Grovely does barefoot bowls — grab a rink, have a hit and a feed at the bistro. Give them a call to book.

Keep it free and outdoors: pack a picnic for Ironbark Gully in Samford Conservation Park, Ferny Hills — wood barbecues, shady tables and easy walking trails, just off Samford Road. Dogs welcome on a lead.

Whatever you're doing, happy Father's Day to the local dads.

🧘 A free community wellness morning is coming to Arana Hills — Saturday 25 July.

Move. Nourish. Connect. brings together a collective of local health and wellness businesses for a free morning at Studio Pilates Arana Hills, 6 Patricks Road.

From 6.30am to 11am you can grab a free 5-minute head, neck and shoulder massage, try some product tastings, browse local activewear, meet the business owners and pick up practical tips on movement, nutrition and self-care.

There's a good-cause angle too — participating businesses are donating a portion of the day's proceeds to Friends with Dignity, a charity supporting people affected by domestic and family violence.

Free entry, no bookings — just drop in.

🛝 Looking for somewhere to take the kids these school holidays? The All Abilities Playground at Leslie Patrick Park just got a brand new sensory space.

The Hills District All Ages, All Abilities Playground in Arana Hills opened its latest $500,000 stage on 26 June — designed especially for children with low or no vision.

New features include a braille trail linking the play equipment, a beehive cubby, sensory gardens, a vibration post, overhead optic sensory panels and pavement art. It all connects to the existing playground, with accessible paths, sheltered picnic tables and an all-abilities toilet.

It's free and fully fenced — a great one for the holidays.

📚 Heads up if you use the Arana Hills Library — it's closed until August.

The branch shut on 6 June for essential upgrades and reopens Wednesday 5 August.

While it's closed, your library card still works everywhere else in the City of Moreton Bay network — you can borrow, return and pick up reservations at any other branch. The closest is Albany Creek Library, 16 Ferguson Street.

With the winter school holidays starting 27 June, if you're after holiday programs for the kids, it's worth booking into one of the other branches early.

New to it? Containers for Change is Queensland's container refund scheme — most drink cans, cartons and bottles (150ml–3L) are worth 10c each when you return them.

If your stash is piling up, here's where to cash it in close to home:

📍Arana Hills Plaza — TOMRA reverse vending machine in the carpark (cnr Patricks Rd & Dawson Pde, behind the bus stop). Mon–Sat 7am–9pm, Sun 7am–6pm.

📍Arana Hills, 1160 South Pine Rd — U Can Recycle depot; takes bag drops too.

📍Keperra, Great Western Super Centre — a new solar-powered machine (cnr Samford & Settlement Rds), open 7am–9pm daily. Queensland-built, and it's taken 88,000+ containers since opening in April.

📍The Gap, 59 Settlement Rd — U Can Recycle pop-up and bag drop at Rivercity Family Church.

Council has started fire-trail works on five bushland parcels it bought back under its Land Buyback for Environmental Purposes Program — three of them right on our doorstep:

519 Bunya Road, Bunya
309 Eatons Crossing Road, Eatons Hill
Works run through to late June. Once the trails are in, council will use the cooler winter conditions to carry out planned ecological burns — reducing fuel loads and protecting native habitat ahead of next summer. Qualified wildlife spotter-catchers are on site during the trail works.

When a burn is happening nearby, MoretonAlert sends an SMS or email beforehand — worth the few seconds to set up.

🎡 Just over one week to go — the Hills Carnivale is back at George Willmore Park.

Saturday 30 May, from 12pm. Free entry. Ferny Way, Ferny Hills.

It's the grand finale of the Hills Festival — two stages of live music, a dedicated Kids Zone with amusement rides, workshops, games and roving entertainers, plus dozens of lifestyle markets and multicultural food trucks. A proper family day out without the entry price.
