On track for creative repairs 🚂 🐶

Di sent us a message about a beloved wooden train track that became a beloved wooden train SNACK for a certain pooch who will remain unnamed. It’s choo CHOO not chew CHEW 🤦

Bit of a tricky one considering the integral connector pieces had been throughly chomped, but with Michael’s creative problem solving (I think I can, I think I can) and some handy craft supplies, we were able to get the train back on the track!

Alex is on the case! The suitcase that is...

This hardshell luggage had some funky fabric lining issues, luckily Alex likes a challenge! With a needle, thread and some elbow grease Alex was able to get this luggage back on a roll!

Feeling a little dusty?

Kaye had already taken her vacuum to be repaired by TWO seperate repair services with no luck. Unwilling to suck it up and quit, Kaye visited us at Boronia Library Your Library to see if we had the grit needed to fix it.

Dave took a proper look and found it needed a good clean and a new filter — and then, underneath a bit of old tape, some seriously exposed and dangerous wiring. Rather than just cutting the cord off as we'd normally do, Dave checked in with our electrician Will, and together they shortened the cord safely and sent the vacuum home in full working order. Kudos to Kaye for not giving up and giving the Knox Repair Cafe a go!

Olgammie's mattock | Boronia Library

Olgammie brought in her mattock with the head completely broken off — but not before telling Michael "me and Mattie, we're like that 🤞" crossing her fingers to show just how inseparable they are.

Michael got to work removing the rusted screws, clearing out the rotten wood inside the head, and carefully shaving down the broken handle so it fit snugly back in place. Mattie lives to dig another day!

For the record: we totally fixed that.

Kate came to a Repair Cafe session with her dad's broken record player. And while it was a little fiddly, we really don't want to sound like a broken record... so we fixed it!

This will be a wonderful surprise for his upcoming 80th birthday!

At Knox Repair Cafe, our motto is Fixing things, building community. Here's a perfect example of a wonderful connection made through our repair volunteers.

Aishling is one of our talented fabric mending volunteers. Recently Aishling brought her Mum along to a repair cafe session with a broken mixer. We were able to get it fixed, and at our next session, Aishling brought in cake made by her mum as thanks for the repair!

The cake was very well received by the sweet-toothed young family member of one of our other volunteers... (it's me, Bekky. I'm the other volunteer and that's my cake-obsessed son pictured.)

So that's one fixed mixer, one satisfied customer, and one very happy toddler!

We love stories like these, where family members, neighbours, and even strangers can come and connect with us over something broken, and ideally: something repaired.
