On the 11th of June 2026, 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 artist Kirsten Maglalang led a group of participants from diasporic and refugee backgrounds including Afghanistan, Lebanon and the Phillipines in a collaging workshop. From experiences of war to their favourite foods, everyone exchanged stories with each other. In English and in their mother tongue languages, letters were written on the back of exquisitely collaged postcards to land and water, counter-archiving yearning for homelands and gratitude for the welcome of these Indigenous lands.

In this workshop, participants will explore how Indigenous cultures beautify, symbolise, and connect with their environment and heritage. Kylie will also guide you in preparing and making a wearable paperbark pendant using additional materials like thread and beeswax.

All materials will be provided including paperbark foraged respectfully from Country, threads/cotton, recycled plastic needles, beeswax, & native honey. The following will also be provided: paintbrushes, necklace leather thonging to attach to pendants as well as a bee/honey allergy-friendly clear varnish for those who may need it.

Big warm congratulations to our friends and peers, Craig Taunton and Van Nguyen from Outloud on their win at the Western Sydney Community Forum’s Zest Awards last Thursday night. They took out the award for Outstanding Project - Community Arts and Culture for their Respect Project; a vital project that addresses Domestic and Family Violence through an early intervention harm reduction approach, using the vehicle of music. CuriousWorks were honoured to be finalists alongside them for our Holding Space project.

It’s that time of year again… when community arts orgs like ours reach out to arts-loving and socially and community-minded folk like you to make a sincere appeal for support.

There are so many deserving causes you may be considering donating to right now… We’re sending this note in case you felt your support could stretch to CuriousWorks, too.

Why support us? Here are three good reasons for a start:

1. 𝗪𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗿𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝗻𝘂𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀. In 2025, our work engaged 73 individual artists who earned a collective income of $127K; 15% of whom were early career artists supported to take their next steps.

2. 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗳𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗲𝘀. In 2025, we had 704 direct participants involved in artistic outcomes, creative developments and workshops; we commissioned 20 new artworks by practicing career artists, and held the space for 188 community participants to make new artworks too.

💧Over the past few weeks, 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 artist Nicole Barakat has been leading a group of women from refugee backgrounds including from Afghanistan, Congo, Iran, Lebanon, Palestine & Syria in her textile workshop series. Held at SSI - Settlement Services International's Community Refugee Welcome Centre, they have been engaging with eco-dyeing and cyanotype printing with native plants that were gathered on site. Through this, they also engaged in discussions about plants from their own homelands that they eat and use for medicine, as well as exchanged stories with each other in relation to the importance of land, water, and plants.

What does rain mean to you? Come and share your memories of rain through a sensory workshop of sounds and smells of rainfall, storms and rivers, and the scents associated with wet earth, plants, and changing weather.

Through listening, exploring scents and through conversation, participants will contribute to stories of the relationship between land and water and how rain connects people, places, and histories across time.

Petrichor is the smell of the moment when rain touches earth and landscapes transform. The word 'petrichor' in the Filipino language is 'alimuom'.

📝 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 #𝟭: 𝟰-𝟲𝗽𝗺, 𝟭𝟴𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗮𝘁 𝗣𝗛𝗜𝗩𝗘 & 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗮 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝗸
This poetry workshop is all about reflection, cultural storytelling, and shared creative expression with each other. We will first come together at 4pm in the communal area of PHIVE located inside Parramatta Library.

We will then walk down to Parramatta Park where we will explore identity, land, and water through storytelling and basic poetry writing using metaphors and similes. Fale will also lead you through sensory, nature-based exercises and poetic devices to connect to yourselves and environment/Country. We will then take these discussions back to the warmth and light of PHIVE where we will write our poems.

📝 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 #𝟮: 𝟰-𝟲𝗽𝗺, 𝟮𝟱𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗳 𝗝𝘂𝗻𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 𝗮𝘁 Arts and Cultural Exchange - ACE
This workshop will extend on the previous one by refining poetry to more developed pieces, and introducing more poetic devices. From private writing to poetry performance based techniques; i.e. spoken word. Participants will prepare and present a final reading/performance to the group. Those who are confident or wish to present their final pieces will be encouraged to potentially perform at the 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 celebratory community EOY gathering as special acts.

💧On the 28th of May 2026, 𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚 𝗦𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗘 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲 artists Sohrab Kolahdooz and Shervin Mirzeinali held their Persian Percussion workshop at Arts and Cultural Exchange - ACE. Despite the heavy rain, spirits were high as the musical afternoon unfolded into one of deep connection with each other.

Sohrab and Shervin began the workshop with a collaborative performance. They then led a group of Iranian, Afghan, Assyrian and Congolese participants in playing instruments and using stones to co-create a rhythm together. This rhythm transformed into a piece of music evoking land and water. 🎶
