Are you constantly telling your child to be quiet or get down from wherever they have clambered up to? Our instinct is to try to stop it but really they’re doing exactly what they are supposed to do.

Climbing feeds two senses at once; the sense of where your body is in space, and the sense of movement and balance. That input has a calming, organising effect on the nervous system, and this is especially true for children who feel things big. The shouting isn’t separate, it’s the excitement finding its way out.

Studies on risky outdoor play have found that kids who get to take real risks show more creativity, stronger social skills, and greater resilience. Our children know how to self manage it for themselves as well; they climb, they rest, get loud, then go quiet again. And they will do this all on their own, if we let them.

So at Desert Pea, we don’t chase quiet, careful kids. Climbing is real, and the noises are allowed to be loud. That’s not a session getting out of hand, that’s the work. At Desert Pea we truly believe we see it all unfolding in real time when the kids are able to climb, swing and hang.

We are alongside each child, and what’s appropriate looks different depending on their age, stage, and how they experience the world. Part of our job is helping them build awareness for themselves: when a loud voice fits and when it doesn’t, how to read a room and making it safe to climb.

A huge thankyou to our amazing landlords who donated the climbing frame and soft play, they are our vision and support it 🌱.

A place families can exhale, noise and all.

Don’t stop them, redirect them.

Mark making in walls is you could exploring all the good stuff, just on a surface you would rather them not.

Connection Club 🍃

Every child deserves a space where they can just be themselves. Without masking, without pressure to fit a mould that could never fit.

That’s why Connection Club was born.

It’s our after-school group for neurodivergent children, run by Min, where the focus isn’t on “fixing” or fitting in.

It is on connection. Friendships. A safe space to figure out who you are, what you need, and how to speak up for it.

This term started with children writing their own rules:
-Respect everyone’s differences- Respect everyone’s emotions- Do not hurt anyone’s feelings or hurt anyone- Do not blame someone’s communication or sensory needs on them.
“If you need a break, you can go to the other room, the chill room .’’ The room designed and rearranged by them, for them.
That is self-advocacy. And we’re not teaching it at them, they’re building it together.

Fun first.
Games, jokes, low-pressure hangs, the kind of thing every child deserves after a long day at school.

If your child struggles to find their people, or just needs somewhere they don’t have to perform “normal” for an afternoon — this one’s for them.
