Marj Henderson Lecture Series: Lecture #5
It was a full house for last night's lecture by well-known environmental specialist Ellen White. Ellen covered a number of topics included a non-herbicide approach to management of w**ds with particular focus on a w**d of national significance, Bitou Bush, Chrysanthemoides monilifera subsp. A highly invasive shrub, native to South Africa, it is a significant w**d in Australia's coastal ecosystems including the Dirawong Reserve where it is now largely under control and replaced by native vegetation which reappeared naturally given Bitou removal. More information:
https://w**ds.dpi.nsw.gov.au/Weed/Bitoubush
Ellen made the important point in her talk that the financial cost of the non-herbicide approach is no greater than that using herbicides. But more than that the legacy effects of herbicides on soil ecology are also no longer a problem. In the course of the evening's talk a lecture from Gresham College entitled "A Living Planet" by Professor Helen Czerski was mentioned and we promised to make details of that available on this website for follow-up: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FBJ7mo39Ftg&list=PLU3TaPgchJtSPXI81h3ngbODObreJWiSJ&index=5&t=2188s
So thank you Ellen for an engaging talk and we hope you will return to share your knowledge and wisdom. We note your prior extensive experience with the Dirawong Reserve and many other aspects of Evans Head complex environments. Ed

MARJ HENDERSON LECTURE SERIES: LECTURE 5 ELLEN WHITE 17 June at 5:30
Biologist and Environmental Scientist, Ellen White, will be speaking at the Museum next Wednesday at 5:30pm. Admission Free
Ellen is well-known for her non-herbicide approach to the management of Bitou Bush on the Dirawong Reserve at Evans Head, a legacy plant from the sand-mining industry days planted out to stabilise the distrurbed landscape created by mining. She is probably less well known for her work on better solutions to sewerage management at the Evans Head STP, pollution of Salty Lagoon in Broadwater National Park and engagement with First Nations in Northern Queensland. Ellen has extensive knowledge of our biological systems and their interconnectedness. Promises to be a most engaging talk from one of our Evans Head Pioneers who has shaped who we are now. See you there. All welcome. Ed

THE EVANS HEAD LIVING MUSEUM NEWSLETTER - May 2026

Welcome,

This year, the Museum has gratefully welcomed new members and
volunteers, strengthened our capacity to preserve our rich heritage, and
strengthened links to local groups and supporters. From hosting school
visits, attending Richmond Valley community functions, pursuing strategic
grant opportunities, and securing significant acquisitions, the Museum
continues to evolve as a vibrant space for learning, reflection, and local
pride.

JEAN HARTAM-BAYES - THE TRIANGLE NEWSPAPER
Marj Henderson Lecture Series Number 3
The Jean Hartam-Bayes event was a respectful tribute to a
remarkable woman who made a significant contribution to the local
community. At the event, her niece, Judith McCormack, beautifully
read a poem about Jean written by Australian author and poet Neil
Creighton, her nephew.
The Triangle weekly newspaper was first published in 1954 with June
McMaster Yabsley as the editor. It was produced on Thursdays and
distributed to Woodburn, Evans Head, Broadwater and Coraki. Jean
Isobel Hartam-Bayes froM Evans Head took over in 1959 and continued to
publish for the next 15 years.
If any of you have old copies of The Triangle we
would love to see them. The museum has digitised
extracts from 80 editions, and for a small research
fee, the transcripts can be examined for family
history references. Please e-mail for more information.

NEIL CREIGHTON - AUTHOR "MY BLOOD'S COUNTRY"
Marj Henderson Lecture Series Number 4
The Museum was delighted to welcome English and Drama teacher Neil Creighton, nephew
of the subject of our most recent lecture, Jean Hartam Bayes. Neil is the author of seven
books of poetry and has a lifelong association with — and deep love for Evans Head.
His most recent book, My Blood’s Country, explores the colonisation of the Clarence and
Richmond River Valleys, focusing primarily on William and Magdalen Yabsley, the founders
of Coraki. The collection also includes poems about cedar sawyers, bullock drivers,
shipbuilders, heroic tales of salvage, the impact of colonisation on First Nations people, and,
of course, his enduring affection for Evans Head.
Those in attendance were deeply moved by Neil’s powerful and
poignant recitation of his beautiful poems. Neil has promised to return
later in the year for another performance. One not to miss!
The next Marjory Henderson Lecture Series No 5 will feature the
renowned botanist Ellen White on Wednesday, 17th June 2026 at 5:30 pm.

NEW VOLUNTEER - LIVING AVIATION HISTORY
We are delighted to welcome a new volunteer, G*i Taylor, to the Evans Head Living Museum.
G*i is the daughter of renowned Australian aviation pioneer Sir Patrick Gordon Taylor. She
was also a founding member of the highly successful Great Eastern Fly-In. This much-loved
event remains an important part of Evans Head’s aviation story.
Sir Patrick Gordon Taylor was one of Australia’s great aviation
pioneers. His passion for flying began during World War I in Europe
and continued throughout his life, leading him to become both an
aviation leader and a respected author. He wrote eight books
recounting his remarkable flying experiences and achievements.
Taylor served as second pilot and navigator aboard the famous
Southern Cross alongside Sir Charles Kingsford Smith on several
historic flights between Australia and New Zealand. In 1933, he also
navigated two significant flights between Australia and England with
Charles Ulm. In 1934, he made aviation history by completing the first
crossing of the Pacific from Australia to the United States via Fiji and
Hawaii.
One of Taylor’s most courageous moments came on 15 May 1935, during the
first trans-Tasman airmail flight. When mechanical failure threatened the
aircraft, Taylor repeatedly climbed outside onto the wing mid-flight to transfer
oil between engines, helping prevent disaster. Thanks to his extraordinary
bravery and quick thinking, the aircraft was able to return safely to Sydney. In
recognition of his courage, he was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal, later
replaced by the George Cross.

ANZAC DAY 2026
Museum representatives attended local ANZAC Day Services at the State Heritage Listed
Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome and the Dawn Service. The Aerodrome Service focused on
commemorating those who trained and served at No. 1 Bombing & Gunnery School and No. 1
Air Observers School. More than 1,000 of those who trained here, under the Empire Air
Training Scheme, lost their lives during the War, many in Bomber Command. Some also died
during training and are buried in the Commonwealth War Grave site at the Evans Head
Cemetery.
KOORIE WW1 DIGGERS REMEMBERED ON ANZAC DAY
Edward and George Kapeen
This year, our Museum displayed the history of two Aboriginal men from Cabbage Tree Island,
Edward Capeen and George Kapeen. Edward Capeen #4039, an Indigenous Australian,
enlisted as a Private in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) and was posted with the 31st
Infantry Battalion and sent to fight on The Western Front in France.
He was born at Broadwater NSW to Jack and Charlotte Capeen in 1895 and was working as a labourer when he enlisted at Lismore on the 4th July 1916. He trained in Brisbane before embarking for overseas on board HMAT Boona in October 1916.
George enlisted in April 1917 and served with the Number 1 Light Horse Brigade in Africa and the Middle East and was initially sent to the island of Malta. Both men returned home and were awarded the British War
Medal, the 1914-1915 Star, and the Victory Medal for their service to our country in The Great War.
They were recognised for their Service at a special Remembrance Day Ceremony held at
Coraki on 11th November 2018 which marked 100 years since the end of World War One.
Thank you to Halden Boyd for his research.
SCHOOL VISITS
St Mary’s Catholic College, Casino
Richard Gates delivered an extensive lecture on local geology, biology, and archaeology to
senior students from St. Mary’s Catholic College in Casino. We value his expertise in these
areas and are very grateful for the time he dedicated to his presentation on these fascinating
subjects. The insights he shared enhanced the students’ understanding of their local area and
sparked their curiosity about the geological, biological, and archaeological features of the
region.
Thank you Richard, for your invaluable contribution to our learning!

THE NORTHERN RIVERS HOME SCHOOLING COMMUNITY
The Evans Head Living Museum also hosted a highly successful, and engaging, educational
experience for the Northern Rivers Home Schooling Community.
The program featured an informative PowerPoint presentation based on the museum’s seven
key themes, providing participants with a deeper understanding of local history and heritage.
An interactive Environmental Awareness activity invited students to take part in a beach
debris sorting exercise, highlighting the importance of responsible plastic disposal and care
for our coastal environment.
Students and parents also enhanced their knowledge of the museum’s displays by participating in the “Seek
and Find” Challenge Booklet, encouraging active exploration and discovery throughout the museum.
The visit concluded with a reading of Dave the Deckie by local author David Burston (Mr Chipz), which was warmly received by all participants.
The enthusiasm, manners and engagement of all the students, was praiseworthy. Participants
were thanked for their positive responses and encouraging feedback.
A sincere thanks to G*i Taylor and David Burston, museum volunteers, for their valued
support and assistance.

RICHMOND VALLEY COUNCIL COMMUNITY FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE GRANT
Richmond Valley Council’s ongoing support for the Museum was extended this year by
support for our Grant application ‘Strengthening Evans Head Living Museum Operations and
Community Engagement through Digital Infrastructure’. The Museum looks forward to the
extra capacity the new computer systems will provide.
The Museum is very grateful for Life Member, Paul Goodyer’s hard work in delivering the
systems upgrades.
NORTH COAST CHAPTER MEETING MUSEUMS & GALLERIES NSW
Michael Ryan and I recently attended the North Coast Chapter meeting of Museums &
Galleries NSW, held at Crawford House, Alstonville. It was a valuable opportunity to connect
with other museum volunteers and deepen understanding of best practices in collection
preservation and conservation. It was helpful to learn how the State Library of NSW focuses
on legal deposit and compliance of publications, and Trove focuses on national discovery,
digitisation partnerships, and usage analytics. The Museum is working on strengthening
relations with both organisations.

WORK, HEALTH and SAFETY POLICY
For compliance, the committee is currently drafting a Work, Health and Safety Policy. We are
seeking support from Museums & Galleries NSW to review the document and include the
appropriate legislation. We will advise members when this process is complete.

CONSTITUTION UPDATE

A Special General Meeting was held on Thursday 14 May to consider an update to the
Museum’s Constitution. Two Special Resolutions on one motion were passed unanimously.
This was a routine update to our Rules, which was required due to changes in the
Government Acts and Regulations. Thanks to all the Members who attended.

RITCHIES IGA COMMUNITY SUPPORT
Ritchies IGA runs a Community Support Program, and we encourage our members to obtain a
Ritchies card and nominate the Evans Head Living Museum as their chosen beneficiary.
Thanks to the generosity of Ritchie’s and participating shoppers, we currently receive a small
but much appreciated ongoing contribution to support the Museum’s ongoing work.

OPENING HOURS - VOLUNTEERS ALWAYS WELCOME
We warmly welcome new volunteers to join us in supporting the Museum's important work.
The Museum is currently open Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10:00 am
to 1:00 pm.
Ways you can help include: Welcoming visitors, research tasks, scanning, labelling and
cataloguing, designing exhibitions, event planning, conserving collection items, grant writing,
future strategic planning, maintenance, and so much more…

LOOKING AHEAD
As we continue to grow, our focus remains on deepening community connections and
preserving our local heritage for future generations. Thank you to all who support our Living
Museum and help bring history to life.

Kind regards,
Megan Boyd

OUR SPECIAL AND VALUED VOLUNTEERS RECOGNISED AHEAD OF NEW SURFING EXHIBITION

Volunteers at the Evans Head Living Museum have been recognised for their dedicated service during National Volunteer Week 2026.
They were all presented with Certificates Of Appreciation by Museum President Megan Boyd at a surprise ceremony at the Museum during Volunteer Week.
“Their service and unique individual skills when all put together make up a fantastic and diverse Team with the aim of preserving our past and emerging history for future generations to enjoy”, Megan said.
“We are always looking for new volunteers, and anyone who is interested in spending a few hours a week contributing their own skill sets is encouraged to join our vibrant and happy and dedicated Team.”
One of the latest projects on the Museum agenda is creating a display on the history of surfing in the region with the Evans Head Over 8s (Malibu) Club which has now been a part of our local community for over 30 years.
The Evans Head Malibu Club is a prominent family-oriented longboarding organisation on the NSW Far North Coast. Founded in the 1980s, and the Club is best known for hosting the annual Evans Head Malibu Classic, a massive multi-day longboarding event that draws hundreds of competitors from across Australia and overseas.
The group quickly evolved into a tight-knit, multi-generational club. Founding members such as Harry Hann helped guide the Club from a small local collective to a prominent fixture in Australian longboarding, and has grown to over 100 members, featuring a 50/50 male-to-female split and one of the largest junior longboard squads (over 20 juniors) in the country.
The club is officially affiliated with Surfing NSW and Surfing Australia, which has brought developmental support, coaching, and judging courses to the local community.
“The new exhibition exciting project and the surfers have eagerly come on board with lots of history and photographs and stories, and it will make for a wonderful snapshot of surfing and its important history at Evans Head’, Megan said.
“Already businesses have come on board to assist as well which is just wonderful”.
The new Surfing Exhibition is being designed to be unveiled at this years Evans Head Malibu Club Invitational event in October.

BIG TURNOUT FOR ANZAC DAY EVANS HEAD
There was a very large turnout for the Dawn Service at Evans Head with RAAF Personnel from 6 Squadron at Amberley and Evans Head Air Weapons Range leading the day along with Veterans from the local Woodburn-Evans Head RSL Sub-branch and a very large contingent of students from schools in the area including Evans Head and Woodburn. Digger Rod Hatcher led the proceedings on a very very wet morning and acknowledged the important role students played in support of ANZAC Day. Students gave the occasional addresses on the morning with reflections on the importance of ANZAC Day and the lives of some of those who had served in World War I including nurse Lily Campbell from Kilgin in Woodburn who served in the Gallipoli campaign and subsequently in the 3rd Afghan War where she managed a 500 bed hospital in India. Local Mayor Robert Mustow and State Member Richie Williamson laid wreaths at the ceremony along with the Museum's President Megan Boyd and many others in what was probably the largest wreath-laying ceremony we have seen at a Dawn Service at Evans Head. Many of us felt sorry for those who were soaked by the heavy rain particularly the RAAF personnel who stood silent watch on the morning and the kids in their school uniforms without complaint.
The Dawn Service was followed by a Memorial Service at the State Heritage Listed Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome where more than 5,000 trained during World War II and 1,100 were killed in service to Australia and Empire. A number of those who trained at Evans Head died while here, mostly in aircraft accidents, are buried at the Evans Head Commonwealth War Grave site but not all those who died here are buried there. Recent research by the Museum identified a significant number of other personnel buried in other locations, mostly in the home towns where they came from. But the body of at least one person who drowned was never found. In the occasional address given at the Aerodrome Service the former president of the Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome spoke about some of these individuals and gave a message of support for RAAF personnel who potentially might be caught up in current events in the Middle East, and a message of appreciation for their steadfast attendance at Aerodrome events. Our president also laid a wreath.
Following the Aerodrome Service the local sub-branch, led by Rod Hatcher, conducted a Service at the Evans Head War Cemetery where the Museum also laid a wreath.
This service was followed by a street parade which will be part of a subsequent posting. Ed

OUR BRAVE LOCAL RIVERTOWN KOORIE DIGGERS REMEMBERED FOR THEIR GALLANT SERVICE IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 SHOWCASED IN NEW MUSEUM DISPLAY
- by Halden Boyd

IN THE true spirit of Australian larrikinism two Aboriginal lads from Cabbage Tree Island and our local area have had their deep war secrets revealed in National Archive of records which have been uncovered of their gallant involvement and service in the First World War.

It is not certain whether they were brothers or cousins, but from their times just after enlistment they were proving that they were strong individuals, being reprimanded and even sent to military confinement for standing their ground against their senior officers.

However despite at the time of not being recognised as Australian Citizens they were quickly accepted to join the Army to fight for King and Country and take on in the true spirit of Brothers In Arms in bitter battles which raged Europe at the time.

Even their names from their service records were slightly different, and the first to enlist was Edward Capeen in 1916, followed by George Kapeen in 1917.

Edward Capeen #4039, an Indigenous Australian, enlisted as a Private in the Australian Imperial Forces (AIF) and was posted with the 31st Infantry Battalion and sent to fight on The Western Front in France.

Edward Capeen was born at Broadwater NSW to Jack and Charlotte Capeen in 1895 and was working as a labourer when he enlisted at Lismore on the 4th July 1916.

Edward Capeen trained in Brisbane before embarking for overseas on board HMAT Boona in October 1916.

He joined his unit in France in May 1917 where they were engaged in operations at Baupaume.

In September 1917 during the Battle of Polygon Wood, Edward Capeen was seriously wounded.

They were camped at Chateau Segard and ordered to move out that evening at 9 pm.

Under cover of darkness and an artillery barrage, his unit moved forward shooting or bayonetting any enemy who resisted, taking prisoners as they could along the way.

Through thick smoke and fog they found it almost impossible to make their objectives, but they pushed forward all that day alongside English troops.

At dusk the Germans launched a strong counter attack which was broken by another barrage of artillery fire.

Many men were killed or wounded on this day, including Edward Capeen.

He was evacuated to hospital in England with a serious gun shot wound to his left leg.

After treatment he was repatriated home to Australia and medically discharged in July 1918.

He returned to his family and married Dorothy Funnell in 1919.

The (Kapeen) Capeen family are well known for their sporting success, and George Kapeen who also served in the 1st Light Horse Regiment, was a well known boxer, and his nephew Eddie Kapeen played half back in representative rugby.

The records of George Kapeen #3502 are a little less clear because his mother and father were not listed on his Attestation Papers.

What is known was that he enlisted in April 1917 and served with the Number 1 Light Horse Brigade in Africa and the Middle East, and was initially sent to the island of Malta.

Both men returned home and were awarded the British War Medal, the 1914-1915 Star, and the Victory Medal for their service to our country in The Great War.

Both men were recognised for their Service at a special Remembrance Day Ceremony held at Coraki on 11th November 2018 which marked 100 years since the end of World War One.

Thanks for your service lads to make Australia the free place we love and cherish.

ANZAC DAY SERVICE 8:15 am
State Heritage Listed Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome
The public is invited to attend the Annual ANZAC Day Service at the State Heritage Listed Evans Head Memorial Aerodrome. The Service commemorates those who trained and served at No. 1 Bombing & Gunnery School and No. 1 Air Observers School. More than 1,000 of those who were here under the Empire Air Training Scheme lost their lives during the War, many in Bomber Command. Some also died during training and are buried in the Commonwealth War Grave site at the Evans Head Cemetery. Our Museum had an exhibition some years ago about those who lost their lives while here. 75% lost their lives in aircraft accidents.
Recent research shows that a number of individual who died while training are not buried in the Evans Head Cemetery but were repatriated to their home towns and suburbs for burial.
We thank the RAAF for its attendance at our Annual Service.

OUR LOCAL MUSEUM PROUDLY SCREENS RARE ANZAC INSIGHTS

An author and film maker who visited ANZAC Cove in 2001 was so overwhelmed by the experience he has produced a documentary film researching the history of the conflict which has shaped the way Australians respect those who made the Supreme Sacrifice for the freedom of our country in World War 1.

John Stuart's research, which looks at both sides of the conflict and its military complexities, will be showcased at two screenings of his film at the Evans Head Living Museum on ANZAC Day 2026.

Full of poetic prose and never been seen images is encompassed in the striking film called "Coming Home".

The film has received world wide accolades , including singer songwriter Eric Bogle who is the writer of the ANZAC song "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda".

The documentary has also received praise from the Turkish Consulate In Sydney and the Turkish Embassy in Canberra.

"I would like to congratulate you for the excellent work and dedication", Dr Sadja Hannah Arca the Turkish Consulate General said.

THe poignant documentary will be screened at the Evans Head Living Museum which will be open on ANZAC Day Saturday 25th April from 10am to 1pm.
