Did you know Australia is home to around 1900 native bee species which is nearly 7% of global bee species, more than any single country?! 🐝
Only 11 of Australia native bee species are social and live in hives. The rest are solitary, living in holes in the ground, deadwood and in masonry. When most people picture bees they are thinking of the European Honey bee (Apis Melliferna) which was introduced here in 1820. This species is actually invasive and can outcompete smaller less hardy native species.
So why should we care about native bees? Bees are super important for our food system 🍏: 71 of the 100 most eaten crops in the world are pollinated by insects, and currently our food systems heavily rely on the invasive European Honeybee (Apis mellifera) to pollinate our crops. They are shipped around in their thousands to help farmers pollinate our crops 🍅
But this system is broken as these hives are prone to disease and parasites which can decimate bee colonies. This is why bringing our native bee populations back from the brink is so important ✊🌏
Learn how to support our native bees by joining us for a fun, hands-on workshop building native bee hotels using recycled and natural materials 🌿
Hosted by Glenbervie Stationeers and led by Clancy — aka “The Bee Man” — this interactive session begins with a fascinating talk about Australia’s native bees, why they’re so important, and simple ways we can support them in our gardens and local environment.
You’ll then be guided step-by-step to create your own native bee hotel using garden waste and everyday household items. There’ll be plenty of opportunities for questions, conversation and sharing ideas as you build. You’ll leave with your own bee hotel, new knowledge, and inspiration to create more habitat for native bees at home.
