Did you know Australia is home to around 1900 native bee species which is nearly 7% of global bee species, more than any single country?! 🐝

Only 11 of Australia native bee species are social and live in hives. The rest are solitary, living in holes in the ground, deadwood and in masonry. When most people picture bees they are thinking of the European Honey bee (Apis Melliferna) which was introduced here in 1820. This species is actually invasive and can outcompete smaller less hardy native species.

So why should we care about native bees? Bees are super important for our food system 🍏: 71 of the 100 most eaten crops in the world are pollinated by insects, and currently our food systems heavily rely on the invasive European Honeybee (Apis mellifera) to pollinate our crops. They are shipped around in their thousands to help farmers pollinate our crops 🍅

But this system is broken as these hives are prone to disease and parasites which can decimate bee colonies. This is why bringing our native bee populations back from the brink is so important ✊🌏

Learn how to support our native bees by joining us for a fun, hands-on workshop building native bee hotels using recycled and natural materials 🌿

Hosted by Glenbervie Stationeers and led by Clancy — aka “The Bee Man” — this interactive session begins with a fascinating talk about Australia’s native bees, why they’re so important, and simple ways we can support them in our gardens and local environment.

You’ll then be guided step-by-step to create your own native bee hotel using garden waste and everyday household items. There’ll be plenty of opportunities for questions, conversation and sharing ideas as you build. You’ll leave with your own bee hotel, new knowledge, and inspiration to create more habitat for native bees at home.

Have you seen this?

Look what the clever peoples at Moonee Valley Sustainability have done - created a vision for Woodland St, the trees in which as destined to be removed next week. It amazing to see what a good solution could look like and what theyve been campaigning for. We are part of this pollinator corridor so it would be really bad for our connectivity if these trees were lost.

We need to do more visioning at the station to show commuters and local what we are trying to achieve. Anyone up for it?

This is what a safe, smart, sustainable solution looks like for Woodland St and what we have been campaigning for.

We asked those attending our last gathering as well as our volunteers in our Active Transport Collective what elements would need to be included in a safe, smart and sustainable solution.

Our amazing volunteer Lachlan has compiled the suggestions into the following image, which shows, a widened median strip with healthy trees and underplanting, single lane traffic, a bicycle lane and over the horizon, safe pedestrian crossing.

We have sent this image to Ros Spence MP Gabrielle Williams MP Lily D'Ambrosio MP Enver Erdogan MP which provides a vision of what our community wants and deserves. We have asked them to work across departments for better road safe and climate safe solutions.

Lets us know your thoughts below.

Perfect Morning

Fourteen of us set to it for 90 minutes this morning and weeded and mulched the Craigieburn side. A few shrubs we had, we planted to fill some gaps. Its looks brilliant.
But the highlight as always is the people and the chat. Nowhere else can conversation go from weeds.... to soil biome and stomach biome simularities.... to snail slime as a skin products... in five minutes.
We'll be back this side next month, planting some more. Come join us. You don't necessarily need to know anything about snail slime skin products (we'll teach you that in the training!)

A local event in Napier Park focussing on supporting local pollinators. Glenbervie Station is working to provide pollination plants at the station - it would be great if you, our neighbours. could do it as well and we could create a pollinator corridor!!! Go along to this event and learn how. And get free plants!

What a difference a day makes.....

We made the last minute decision to switch the working bee from Saturday to Sunday on the weekend. GOOD CALL!

Not only did we install around 80 plants in the borders, but we met several lovely people passing by, keen to get involved.

Monday commuters were met with a sea of plant guards. It won't take long for the plants to establish and they will look amazing.

We planted Dianella, Knobby Club Rush, Cut Leaf Daisy, Indigenous Bluebells, Blue Devil, Austral Storks Bill, Cornflower, Salvia as well as succulents.

Our next working bee is on 18th April. Come along and meet your neighbours.

In preparation for 2026, a few of us travelled over to Northcote Train Station today to meet the volunteers there who manage a space over 5 times the size of ours. Going for around 10 years, these fantastic humans have created major landscape changes -lush beds, rock gardens and even a dry creek bed! It was so inspirational and the cake was immense too!! They have a 'January intensive' with sessions every week to get on top of the weeds and the watering and it really shows. Maybe we should do that next year?

Completely stunning.

Thank you to Northcote Stationeers for allowing us to fire questions at you left right and centre!!! We've come away energised.
