An Australian first at Northern Health, made possible through the generosity of our community!

Yesterday, we proudly celebrated the launch of PANDA (Personalised Add-on Acupuncture in Northern Emergency Department), an exciting initiative exploring new ways to support patients experiencing pain.

Delivered in partnership with RMIT University, PANDA is bringing acupuncture alongside routine emergency care at Victoriaโ€™s busiest Emergency Department, offering patients another approach to pain management. And it's the generosity of our supporters that's helping bring this innovation to life.

We were delighted to welcome Mr Yong Mark Mi and Simon Wang from Cognis Technology, whose generous $50,000 donation will support further research into the benefits of acupuncture and help expand the program. Thanks to the kindness of Cognis Technology and our wider community of supporters, acupuncturist Amy Oโ€™Brien is already providing this innovative service to patients two days a week in our Emergency Department.

โŒš Could your Apple Watch one day help predict a heart attack, stroke or serious blood clot?
Thanks to the generosity of our wonderful supporters, Northern Health researchers are exploring this exciting possibility. ๐Ÿ’š

Associate Professor Hui Yin Lim and her team are using wearable technology alongside blood tests to better understand the risks faced by people living with chronic kidney disease.

Through the ICONIC project, researchers hope to uncover new ways to identify complications earlier and pave the way for more personalised patient care. Made possible through the $50,000 Northern Health Foundation Research Grant, this is a beautiful example of how generosity can help turn innovative ideas into possibilities that could change lives.

On Monday evening, Northern Health Foundation had the privilege of bringing together our wonderful supporters for our 2026 Donor Thank You event. โค๏ธ

Between 2025 and 2026, more than $1.4 million was distributed by Northern Health Foundation to support patient care, research, innovation and staff excellence across Northern Health โ€“ made possible by the generosity of our community.

From a $500,000 contribution towards the da Vinci surgical robot, to specialist equipment supporting our smallest patients in Childrenโ€™s and Maternity, and research exploring new approaches to managing acute pain in our Emergency Department through the PANDA project โ€“ every donation helps make a difference.

The evening also gave our supporters the chance to hear directly from the clinicians behind this work and learn how their generosity is helping transform care for patients and families across our community.๐Ÿซถ

Thanks to the generous support of the Muriel and Les Batten Foundation, Northern Health has purchased two Panda warmers and a Sonosite ST Ultrasound System, helping our clinical teams provide the best possible care to newborn babies and expectant mothers.๐Ÿคฐ

Bruce Batten, Trustee of the Muriel and Les Batten Foundation, joined his daughters Emily and Elizabeth for a visit to Northern Health, where they met members of our Emergency Department team, Rebekah - Paediatric Emergency Physician, Christie - Manager Nursing Education Emergency Department, and Casey - ED Clinical Support Nurse.

The team demonstrated one of the new Panda warmers, which helps keep newborn babies warm, stable, and safe immediately after birth.๐Ÿ‘ถ

โ€œWhen the Emergency Department found out about the new Panda Warmers, everyone was just over the moon. Having the latest equipment here makes a world of difference to our teams and patients. Itโ€™s hard to put into words what the support of the Muriel and Les Batten Foundation means," said Casey, ED Clinical Support Nurse, Northern Health.

The visit also included a trip to the Maternity Assessment Centre, where Simone, Midwifery Unit Manager - Birthing Suite and Maternity Assessment Centre, demonstrated the new Sonosite ST Ultrasound System.

Northern Health delivers more than 3,600 babies each year, and this new ultrasound system will support our clinical teams to monitor both mothers and babies throughout pregnancy.

We are incredibly grateful to the Muriel and Les Batten Foundation for their long-standing and generous support of Northern Health. Their generosity is making a real difference to our patients and the teams who care for them.
