Engadine RSL Sub Branch Providing for the well-being, care, compensation and commemoration of serving and ex-serving defence

The Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL) evolved as a direct result of the experience of the Diggers of 1914-1918 — their mateship, their post-war needs and welfare, and their sense of what it meant to be an Australian.

Today we remember Sapper Darren Smith, Sapper Jacob Moerland, and Explosive Detection Dog Herbie, who died as a result of wounds sustained during combat operations in Afghanistan.

Sapper Moerland (21), Sapper Smith (26), and Herbie (3) were critically wounded when an improvised explosive device detonated on 7 June 2010.

Jacob, Darren, and Herbie were from the Brisbane-based 2nd Combat Engineer Regiment. They were deployed as part of the 1st Mentoring Task Force (MTF-1) on what was their first operational deployment.

Darren left behind his wife Angela and their young son Mason. Jacob left behind his fiancée, Kezia. Our thoughts are with their families, friends, and mates on this anniversary.

We remember not only the soldiers who served, but also the military working dogs who stood beside them in the most dangerous of circumstances. Herbie's service and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We will remember them.

Today we remember Sapper Rowan Robinson, who was killed during operations in Afghanistan in 2011.

Twenty-three-year-old Sapper Robinson was serving with the Special Operations Task Group when he was tragically killed in action on 6 June 2011.

Rowan was born in Wahroonga, New South Wales, and left behind his loving mother, father, sister, and two brothers.

He joined the Australian Army in 2006 and, following recruit training, was posted to the 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment. After four years of service, he was posted to the Incident Response Regiment in early 2010, where he completed his reinforcement cycle. This was Rowan's second deployment to Afghanistan, having previously deployed on Operation Slipper in 2007.

His colleagues described him as a superb young man who was fit, happy-go-lucky, and a valued team member. Rowan was a dedicated and professional soldier whose skill belied his youth. Those who had the pleasure of knowing him were drawn to his easy-going nature, which made him popular with his peers and respected by his chain of command.

Our thoughts are with Rowan's family, friends, and mates today.

We will remember him.
Lest we forget.

On this day in 1916, the Returned & Services League of Australia (RSL Australia) was established by veterans determined to support those who had served, and their families.

For 110 years, the RSL has stood for mateship, compassion, and service, advocating for the wellbeing of current and former Australian Defence Force members and preserving the spirit of service in our nation.

Today, we honour the legacy and ongoing mission of the RSL, and all those who have served Australia with dedication and courage.

Today we remember Lieutenant Marcus Case (27), who was killed in Afghanistan on this day in 2011.

Marcus was deployed to Afghanistan as a Heron Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operator from the Sydney-based 6th Aviation Regiment. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan. He was tragically killed when the CH-47D Chinook helicopter in which he was travelling crashed in southern Afghanistan.

Marcus was a keen and motivated soldier who excelled in everything he undertook. He lived life to the fullest, embracing every opportunity and making the most of it. His mates remember him as someone who could always be relied upon to get the job done.

Before undertaking pilot training, Marcus served as a Commando, demonstrating the drive and determination that would continue throughout his military career.

Marcus left behind his parents and five siblings. As the youngest of six children, he was deeply loved and his loss was keenly felt by all who knew him.

Our thoughts are with his family and mates today.
We will remember him.

Today we remember Lance Corporal Andrew Jones, who was killed in Afghanistan on this day in 2011.

Andrew was 25 years old and served with the Brisbane-based 9th Force Support Battalion. This was his first deployment to Afghanistan. Tragically, he was killed in a green-on-blue attack by a member of the Afghan National Army.

Andrew is remembered as a loyal, reliable, and trustworthy soldier who was dedicated to serving his country. He was a team player who loved his job. Although quiet in nature, he was known to enjoy a joke with his mates.

Andrew left behind his loving parents, two younger siblings, and his girlfriend. Our thoughts are with them today.

We honour his service and sacrifice.
We will remember him.
Lest we forget.

Today we remember Sergeant Brett Wood, MG DSM, who was killed in action in Afghanistan on this day in 2011.

Sergeant Wood was serving with the Special Operations Task Group when he was tragically killed by an improvised explosive device explosion. Thirty-two-year-old Brett was from the Sydney-based 2nd Commando Regiment.

Brett left behind his loving wife Elvi and family. Our thoughts are with them today.

Brett had significant operational experience. His first deployment was to Bougainville in 2000, followed by East Timor in 2001 and Iraq in 2003. In 2006, he deployed to Afghanistan and was awarded the Medal for Gallantry:

“For gallantry and leadership in action as a Commando Team Commander, of the Special Operations Task Group – Task Force 637, whilst deployed on Operation SLIPPER Rotation Three Afghanistan, May – September 2006.”

The citation recognised Brett’s courage and leadership under intense enemy fire during Operation Perth in the Chora Valley.

In 2007, Brett received a Special Operations Commander – Australia Commendation for service with Tactical Assault Group – East. He returned to Afghanistan in 2009 as a Section Commander before deploying again in March 2011 for his third tour of Afghanistan.

As a result of his combat leadership during that deployment, Brett was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Medal.

We honour his service, leadership, and sacrifice.
We will remember him.
Lest we forget.
