Our action for World Environment Day (was Fri 5th) and World Oceans Day (Mon 8th).
We were grateful for the break in the weather this morning. Ten trusty volunteers, including one who has not been previously, got to work removing rubbish from Elwood streets.
All local beaches have been dreadfully impacted by litter that has washed into Port Phillip Bay, much of it dumped back onshore by high tides and winds. Sadly, even more will remain in the Bay. 😪🐟🐧🐬

However, our 16kg collection is now safely disposed of in bins and won't end up in the Bay.

Key items: 15 drink bottles and cans; 17 plastic bottle tops; 16 single-use coffee cups and lids; 35 sauce sachets and fish; 340 cigarette butts

Other items: a bollard base, a desktop folding table, a windscreen wiper, 3 batteries, a v**e, a nasal inhaler, plastic strapping, a large chunk of polystyrene, an aluminium take-away pie dish and clothing.

The drizzle didn't dampen our enthusiasm: six volunteers removed over 8 kg of litter from Elwood streets, despite much being hidden under the fallen leaves and several regulars unable to join us. Much of the rubbish was lightweight plastic fragments, so harmful to creatures.

Key items:
25 drink bottles and cans
18 plastic bottle tops that should be
13 single-use coffee cups and lids
275 cigarette butts

We're glad this litter won't end up in Port Phillip Bay or wash up on Elwood beach. 🐬🐟🐧

A lovely, if chilly, autumn morning for our dedicated volunteers to clean up in Elwood, this long weekend. We collected 10 kg today, plus we added 5 kg that volunteers have individually picked up in the past week.
This area seemed cleaner than at other recent times, with cigarette butts notably fewer. 🙏
However other single-use items continue to be littered in significant numbers: 35 drink bottles and cans, 25 coffee cups and lids, 20 other cups, 32 plastic bottle tops that should be and 15 lollipop sticks.
Please encourage alternatives.
Also collected were 2 v**es, a cat toy, children's clothing and a teething toy. Whatever can be recycled, will be.
Thank you all.

Guessing this spot in the carpark near Middle Brighton Baths rarely gets any detailed attention and sad to find so much litter that could directly go down the gutters and drains, straight into the Bay: 3 bags full. I picked up more cigarette butts (383) in a shorter distance than 12 volunteers collected earlier today for LOS3184 in Elwood. 😪 Also very troubling to find fishing line and a length of balloon ribbon. 15 plastic bottle tops were collected too: they should be so they will be recycled.
Odd to find a dozen rusty tent pegs, a squashed stainless steel reusable cup. Also collected two hand towels that will be washed and recycled. Everything else is now safely binned.

Although a few regulars were unable to join us today, nine volunteers contributed to our Clean Up Australia event around Elwood Junction, near St Columba's church.

Our collection weighed in at 12 kg, representing hundreds and hundreds of lightweight plastic items and other litter.

Our stats for today include increases on what we typically collect in this location.
54 drink bottles and cans
32 plastic bottle tops
29 single-use coffee and lids
20 other cups
34 sauce sachets and fish
9 lollipop sticks
803 cigarette butts

Happily, we continue to find few plastic straws - the ban is working. Notable items included a battery, a baby doll and a discarded canvas painting.

Eligible containers have been returned with funds going to BeachPatrol Australia; rubbish is now safely binned.

We are glad our efforts can protect our environment and creatures in this simple way.
