On this World Day for the End of Speciesism ( ), we'd like to tell you about Sir Bruce, a very lucky pig who came to live at Liberation Sanctuary, our forever home for rescued animals. Sir Bruce started life in a piggery, born to become a meal for someone who would probably never consider he had once been a living, feeling being.
Due to the harsh conditions of the farm, little Sir Bruce was extremely sick. This caught the attention of some kind activists, who rescued him, and he was raised in a loving home until he came to live at our sanctuary.
Sir Bruce loves belly rubs, rooting around in the dirt for his treats and eating all the apples that fall from the trees around the property. He is friendly and inquisitive, just like other animals such as dogs and cats, who in most cultures, are treated as companions, not food.
This arbitrary division of animals into those we eat and those we love is predicated on whether we've taken the time to get to know them. Once you let an animal into your heart, you'd likely do anything in your power to save them.
As animals ourselves, we can understand the fear and suffering that comes with imprisonment, separation from the ones we love, witnessing death, violence, illness, pain and eventually, murder. Other animals may not have the sophisticated reasoning abilities most humans possess, but they do experience emotions, perhaps even more acutely than humans.
