We are delighted to celebrate Dr Moreangels Mbizah HB6 on her 2026 Whitley Award and her recent feature in The Guardian.

This recognition honours Moreangels’ outstanding leadership in community-led conservation through Wildlife Conservation Action, and her commitment to fostering human–lion coexistence in Zimbabwe’s lower Zambezi Valley.

Through her work, she continues to demonstrate that lasting conservation is built on trust, collaboration, and lived experience where communities and wildlife can thrive together.

As part of the Whitley Award, Moreangels and her team will continue expanding community-based solutions to reduce human–wildlife conflict, strengthen local conservation leadership, and improve wildlife monitoring systems in the region.

As she shared, moments like these remind her that no dream is too small and no voice is insignificant from a small town in Zimbabwe to global recognition, her journey reflects what becomes possible when people choose to care, act, and believe in change.

We are especially proud of her continued commitment to amplifying community voices and sharing the realities of conservation on the ground.

An Irish Homeward Bound catch-up

Recently, Prof Sile Nic Chormaic (HB6), Dr. Emer Dennehy (HB6), and Dr. Rosa McNamara (HB10) came together to reconnect and continue the conversations that began through their Homeward Bound journeys.

One of the most meaningful parts of HB is the global network that continues long after the program ends - creating friendships, collaborations, and support systems across countries and disciplines.

Across cohorts and continents, these connections continue to strengthen women’s leadership around the world.

Leadership is not always loud.
Sometimes, it looks like listening. Holding space. Creating connection.

In a recent forum on women’s leadership, Elena Ceballos reflected on the visible and invisible barriers women continue to navigate across STEMM, science, academia, and leadership spaces and shared a powerful insight shaped through her work with women leaders globally through Homeward Bound:

“Leadership doesn’t have to be individual or competitive: it can also be about sharing, supporting, and opening space for others to grow.”

These reflections continue in Elena’s latest blog for Homeward Bound, inspired by her experience at the Tanzania Leadership Summit, where women from 17 countries came together in a space grounded in trust, vulnerability, empathy, and collective strength.

There, Elena witnessed how leadership can emerge not through hierarchy or visibility alone, but through connection and mutual care.

“Leadership was not held by one person, but distributed: emerging through trust, care, and mutual recognition.”

Her reflection reminds us that care has always been a form of leadership even when it was not named as such and that leadership is deeply relational, human, and strengthened through connection.

The power of networks is in what we give, what we receive, and what we build together.

In a news piece published on the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg page, Katharina F Heil reflects on the role networks played while preparing for her Homeward Bound Antarctic Leadership Voyage and fundraiser.

Through reconnecting with academic, professional, and personal communities, Katharina experienced firsthand how relationships built over time can create support, opportunity, visibility, and shared growth.

As she shares:

“Giving, giving back and supporting each other - these are values that are particularly close to my heart.”

Her story is a reminder that leadership is strengthened through collaboration, reciprocity, and the people who continue to believe in us along the way.

Following the Homeward Bound Tanzania Summit, Ana Gómez de Castro shared a powerful reflection on the role communication plays in creating change:

“Science needs data, but it also needs narrative. Voices that translate it, bring it closer, make it understandable and inspirational to new generations.”

Through media conversations in Spain alongside Elena Ceballos, Mercedes Martín, and Beatriz Casares, these stories highlighted the connection between science, society, communication, and collective leadership.

At Homeward Bound, we’re proud to see these conversations continuing to ripple outward beyond the summit, inspiring action toward a more sustainable and equitable future.

Thank you Ana, Elena, Mercedes, and Beatriz for amplifying these important conversations globally.

We are incredibly proud to celebrate the graduation of our HB10 cohort.

Over the past year, these remarkable women in STEMM have shown what’s possible when leadership, collaboration, and purpose come together. Representing countries across the globe, they have built deep connections, challenged perspectives, and strengthened their capacity to lead for impact.

HB10 is not just a cohort, it’s a community that will continue to support, uplift, and inspire one another long beyond today.

As they step forward as graduates, they join a powerful global network of women leading change for our planet and our future.

Congratulations, HB10! We are excited to see the impact you'll create as you lead positive change in the world.

Reflecting on an unforgettable experience in Tanzania.

As we wrap up our time in the Serengeti, Co founder Fabian Dattner reflects on the growth of Homeward Bound. It’s no longer just a single idea. It has become a global reality fueled by the energy and dedication of hundreds of women in STEMM.

Set against the breathtaking beauty of the Serengeti, this experience served as a stark reminder of the stakes. Amidst the sightings of zebras, giraffes, and lions, the reality of prolonged drought reinforced the urgency of our work. To lose these precious ecosystems is a global loss we cannot afford.

We are here to bridge the gap between "knowing" the science and "doing" the work of advocacy. By helping women scientists step into the spotlight, we’re ensuring that the future of our planet is guided by both knowledge and courage.

HB Connections wherever you are

So lovely to see our Homeward Bound cohorts reconnecting in London

Moments like this remind us that the HB journey doesn’t end with the program - it continues through the connections and community built along the way.

Left to right: Alice Tuff-Lacey (HB10), Sze Mun Tan (HB10), Bea Casares (HB10), Lauryn Benedict (HB10), Hannah Murdock (HB9), Tammy Davies (HB9).

Thank you to Alice Tuff-Lacey for the photo (with a little help from a friendly waiter!).

"One of the goals of Homeward Bound is to bring women and gender-diverse people together to collaborate... we know we are stronger together."

HB Co-founder Justine Shaw recently shared her heart-led reflections following our expedition to Tanzania. While the wildlife and sunsets of the Serengeti were unforgettable, the real impact came from the "amazing experience of learning from each other."

From Antarctica to Africa, the mission remains the same: elevating the voices of women in STEMM to lead for a sustainable future.
