Before the renovation work begins in mid June, we gathered for one final brigade photo at the station.

This station has been part of countless callouts, training sessions, fundraisers, and community moments. We are looking forward to the upgrades ahead and creating many more memories in the years to come.

Thank you to all our members and supporters who make our brigade what it is.

A big shout and Thank you to Blake Dempster for giving his time to take these photos.

Utter devastation 💔

This scary image shows what lithium-ion batteries can do to your house when they overheat and explode 💥

An Upwey family very sadly lost their home last month after a lithium-ion battery on charge caught fire and tore through the property within minutes. Firefighters later discovered the device was being charged with an incompatible charger.

In a concerning trend, CFA (Country Fire Authority) and Fire Rescue Victoria firefighters are responding to around one fire each day caused by rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.

To minimise the risk of a lithium-ion battery fire:
🔌 Use chargers and cords that are originally supplied with that device.
🔇 Only charge items in rooms with smoke alarms.
⚡ Avoid charging on soft locations such as couches, beds and carpets.
❌ Never use batteries or devices that show signs of swelling or bulging, leaking or overheating.
🤝 Buy products from a trusted supplier.

You will notice Rochester Fire Brigade, Elmore Fire Brigade CFA, Bamawm Extension Fire Brigade and assistance from Echuca CFA down at the end of Mackay Street this morning, performing internal structural fire and search and rescue training. You may see some smoke showing - nothing to be concerned about. Feel free to stand by, outside the exclusion area, and see us in action!

✏️🔥 Looking for a fun school holiday activity?
Why not grab some pens and paper and create your very own Home Fire Escape Plan. It’s a simple activity that helps kids learn what to do in an emergency — and it gets the whole family thinking about fire safety.

School holidays often mean more children are at home and may spend time learning to cook or helping in the kitchen. This makes it especially important to teach them about kitchen fire safety and supervise them closely to prevent accidents. Encourage children to be involved in the kitchen safely, and use this time as an opportunity to teach them about fire risks and how to stay safe while cooking.

👀 Stay Present and Alert
* Never leave cooking unattended — even “just for a minute.”
* If you need to step away, turn off the heat.

🧼 Keep the Area Clean
* Remove grease, dust, and oil buildup from stovetops, ovens, grills, and range hoods.
* Clean appliances regularly and ensure they’re in good working condition.

🚫 Keep Combustibles Away
* Store tea towels and other flammable items well away from heat sources.
* Avoid placing anything on or near cooktops.

👶 Protect Children
* Always supervise kids in the kitchen.
* Keep them away from hot surfaces, boiling liquids, and the oven.
* Turn pot handles inward so they can’t be bumped or grabbed.

🧯 Be Prepared for Emergencies
* Clean and test your smoke alarm “beep beep”
* Keep a fire extinguisher and fire blanket near by — but not so close that you can’t access them if the stove is on fire. Having your fire blanket hung, is ideal for quick access.

By getting your household familiar with where to time and how to using your fire safety equipment, they will feel more confident and prepared, when the time comes. Play pretend and get curious - open your fire blanket and see how big it is and what condition it is in. If it has deteriorated, it might be time to get a new one.

Speak with your children about fire safety, and remind them that they can always get support from an adult in an emergency or by calling 000.
