Emma's Quest

Emma's Quest I am Emma. I have Cerebral Palsy and Dystonia. This page is for my friends and supporters to join me on my journey to live my best life. Hi. My name is Emma.

This is my page sharing with you my Quest for independence after suffering from an undiagnosed and untreated stroke during birth that left me with permanent brain damage and physical disability. Living with Cerebral Palsy, Dystonia and Epilepsy is frustrating and makes me sad sometimes, but most days I am happy. I live with my mum Doreen in Edmonton, just South of Cairns, in Far North Queensland,

Australia. We love living here. But because Cairns is so far away from the rest of Australia, the access to therapies, treatments, specialist therapists and equipment is limited which means we often travel to Sydney to access therapies, trial equipment and get advice from specialists. Mum organises everything and because there is no funding (yet) in FNQ to help me, she fundraises all the time to pay for all of it. This is very hard work and many times we cannot play because we have to go out to fundraise together. Mum has done really well over the past 7 years and I have met amazing therapists who have taught me everything I can do today. But I still have a few things that I want to learn, like sitting on a chair or on the floor without falling off / over and getting back up all by myself. This sounds too easy for you but it is actually very hard for me since the stroke destroyed the parts of my brain that coordinates my muscles and stops the reflexes that make me fall over. Welcome to my page and thank you for sharing my Quest with me.

Using a lot of equipment means that there is always something that needs maintenance or to be fixed. Luckily, Bridget from QuickTime Mobility Servicing can do it all. Wheelchairs, hospital beds and even ceiling hoists. Watching this process was pretty cool and I can report that Emma's hoist is in good working order and gliding smooth again.

So, it looks like I have found a new passion project (on behalf of Emma, of course). It's Cairns specific but if you have ever visited or you plan to visit, it might relate.
I can only dream but maybe one day Cairns will have an accessible public transport option that will benefit locals and visitors. If you are on board, please follow and share.
