Season is slowing right down now - thanks to all who have called me. I look forward to the next season to do it all over! :)

Likely one of my last calls for the season - a snake stuck in netting with an alive lizard! These two were next to another deceased Red Belly also unfortunately stuck in netting. A first for me.

Had a different kind of call on Sunday - original call was for a yellow belly sea snake that had washed up on the Pambula River mouth.

However - once I showed up (with all the wrong gear for a terrestrial snake!) it was in fact a Tiger. It had been attacked by something and I assume was (unsuccessfully) swimming in the surf to try clean the wound infested with maggots.

Very busy spot on the day and thankfully all swimmers respectfully kept their distance and called me.

Unfortunately the wound was too severe so the Tiger did not survive.

Snakes are certainly on the move! Couple busy days ! Here is one of the calls - a good size Eastern Brown stuck in some bird netting out towards Stony Creek.

Snakes are certainly slowly starting to get on the move again. Good time to get on top of yards and clean out any debris/rubbish laying about.

With snake season slowly starting back up I thought it’d be a good time to make a post about what you do if you see a snake.

The answer is simple: leave it be! Majority of cases it’ll be passing through and does not require relocation. Keep your kids and pets inside and watch from a distance until you’re certain it has moved on.

If it is inside, or hangs around for a few days my phone is always on and available for advice or to relocate when required.

This is a release of a little baby red - the first of the season - from inside a caravan park.

I like this picture as it depicts an eastern brown snake from this past season, that the homeowners wanted relocated, nonchalantly resting its head on a camera that I had put down to monitor its burrow activity. It also shows a couple of stills taken from the same camera illustrating the cautiousness and inquisitiveness of this species, something that’s often lost in popular representations of these and other snakes.

These are ancient, sentient and complex creatures that we all need to learn more about!
